  1. Hi,

I got a Trek 5900 in Spring this year to replace my trusty Trek 7000 mountain bike. Before I set off
for work today I grabbed the light and bracket from my Mountain bike but when I got to work i've
since learned that the handlebar on the road bike is too thick to attach the fitting. Therefore I
need a new front light ASAP. Any recommendations on a light which will fit to my handlebars
(standard bontrager which came with the bike)? I don't need a rechargable system as my main riding
is on a morning so it's only a 5 mile ride home on a night via well lit roads.

    Thanks.

On a similar note when I got a new MTB my lights wouldn't point straight on the riser bars because
they didn't have any sideways adjustability. I did realise this at the time of purchase but I was
planning to swap the bars for flats and give the risers to someone else anyway. Anyone thinking
about buying lights to fit on riser bars take note.

Somewhat OT, but I wouldn't use the 5900 over the winter. Once the council starts gritting the roads
I'd put it away till the summer.

Otherwise you'll have a bike in a right state come the summer.

I know this is a silly question, sorry, but have you removed a section of bar tape? Most light
brackets fit road bars unless trying to fit over the tape or cables.

Anyway, I recommend the Cateye HL-EL200: will get you seen (and just about bright enough to light
unlit sections in emergencies too), batteries last well, quite small & light, will fit your bars.
Buy from bike shop, www.cyclexpress.co.uk or www.eBay.co.uk

Yeah, I was kind of hoping to stretch as much use as is possible out of it before winter hits us
full on. It's a little tough to do the miles I want to do on a morning with the mountain bike. Roll
    on summer :-(

    Hi,

I have the Cateye HL-EL300 and it is this I have a problem with. The bracket part number is H-30. I
am trying to fit it on the un-taped part of the handlebar near the stem. The bars are Bontrager Race
Lite. The trip computer fits perfectly on the opposite side but this bracket is way too small. Now
i'm trying to remember if this light came with two brackets and I used the smallest for my mountain
bike. Looks like i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and have a walk down to halfords. Otherwise it's
    home on the bus.

I don't know the H-30 bracket but I know the H-32 fits both road and MTB bars and your light. I have
one and the EL200 and have used it on both road and mountain bikes. See:
    wiggle.co.ukv2 product detail.asp

Have you tried undoing and turning the bracket's quick release lever anticlockwise many turns to
effectively lengthen the bolt? Don't use the normal thick rubber strip, use some other tape or
just nothing. Sorry again if these are too-obvious suggestions but we need to be sure about
    what's going on.

Are the bars unusually fat or are you not familiar enough with road bars to be sure?

My bars (3T) are slightly fatter near the stem. Maybe this could be part of the OP's problem?

Failing that, taping the light onto the top of the stem might be a good short-term bodge while a
    suitable bracket is found.

    Regards,

  9. Judging by the pictures on the web I've found via Google, the H-30 bracket looks just the same as
the H-32. I suspect it's just a previous version of the same basic design.

One site says: "CatEye's new mounting bracket for Liminux lights fits a wide range of handlebars
and, of course, compatiable with ordinal models. This "tool-free" design makes installation a snap"

Note the "wide range of handlebars". I suspect you're not adjusting it properly. Have another go and
    good luck.

Maybe try and find a longer screw/bolt if still no joy. Million to one chance of finding a suitable
one lying about but you never know!! :-)

Could be. Yes, bracket needs to be mounted away from the centre bulge or sleeve. That's why it may
be necessary to remove some tape.

I've spotted one tiny difference: end of H-30 quick release lever is not flared out and wider. The
difference really could be as small as that (if it's designed for same lights).

Here's a picture to explain what i'm talking about. I don't think the bars will be that much thinner
if I removed some tape. I've gone and ordered the EL-400 because it seems that it has a different
system which should solve it. I need a set for each bike anyway so I guess i'll just have to brave
    the grumpy bus driver tonight.

Thanks loads for the responses today, it's great!

Oh yes they will if the bracket can not be fitted entirely away from the centre bulge (it's hard to
tell from the picture). Even just a very few layers of insulating tape can make the final difference
between a bracket fitting and not fitting, let alone handlebar tape. Remove some tape!!!!! ...and
make sure the screw is turned as far anticlockwise as it can go before fitting.

The bracket WILL fit unless the bars are unusually fat (I'll try and find out).

Oh dear, too hasty!!!! Send it back for a refund. That light won't be anything like as good.

I have in my hand as I type the bracket for a Cateye HL-EL200, (coincidentally, I'm reading the
group as a means of putting off going out into the cold to fit the bracket) and it has no sideways
adjustment on it. Only one bracket design was supplied.

Thanks again for your help. I got the EL400 from gbcycles.com. A little pricey but it's a good
light and fits bars up to 32mm so it does fit where I want it to. Can finally ride home now.

Glad you're sorted. You could still buy a H-31 (or H-32?) bracket (only about a fiver) if ever you
do want to use the EL300 on your road bike instead. At least the 400 should be quite a bit lighter -
always nice to save weight on these kind of bikes.

I had exactly the same problem on Monday when cycle express delivered my EL300. I can't get it
anywhere near the centre of the bar and had to lower the Deore brake/gear lever to get it to fit on
the bars. I'll be trying to phone round the Zyro dealers to try and get the H32 bracket, as I don't
fancy paying Wiggle £8.50 for a bracket that sell in the states for just 2 bucks!

I'm using both an H-30 and H-32. The only important difference between the two is the bolt which
closes the H-32 is longer, which gives it the extra capacity, other than that they are about the
    same diameter.

Play with the bracket you'll see that if you angle the closing lever correctly you can actually pop
out that bolt (and nut too). Just go to your local hardware shop and get one to match, except
longer. That should work just fine and will cost pennies instead of Wiggles 8 quid odd :o)

If your new bolt is too long you'll have to cut a few mm off to stop it fouling the light when it's
    clipped in to place.

I'd not realised they were the same bracket, bar the nut and bolt.

Damn. I want a spare H30 bracket so I can swap my EL300 from one bike to another, so I was going to
offer to buy JP's. Anyone got a spare bracket to sell, or do I have to wait for Santa?
