Front derailor problem

A mountain bike front derailleur might work, but the cage will probably
have the wrong curve for the chainring. You need a Shimano FD-R443
front derailleur:

This works with "flat-bar" shifters and large chainrings. It's what my
wife and I have on our Tour Easies and it works great.

This works with "flat-bar" shifters and large chainrings. It's what my
wife and I have on our Tour Easies and it works great.

Another solution would just be getting a left friction shifter. In
addition to being much less finicky, it's easily argued that front
friction is better in terms of shifting speed and control anyway.

My experiences trying to get MTB derailers to work well on road-size
rings have always been negative.

You may find that when a MTB derailer is mounted high enough to clear
the largest ring on a road crank, the chain will drag on the rear cross
piece (that connects the two cage plates) when in the granny ring.

I have a Shimano RSX front road derailer combined with a 62/52/39
crank, and the derailer mounting height has to be within about 1 mm for
it to work.

Yep, LX/Otherwise MTB shimano shifters are not compatible with road
FDs..need to get an older, made for 48t big ring, MTB FD...bottom pull,
that will work great. copy to Tom Sherman.

But as the gent stated, and the problem is, MTB flat bar shifters from
our friends at shimano are not compatibnle with road, including RSX,
Fds. Gent needs the R440 FD mentioned in the post above, which I forgot
about.

Thanks for the Imput. I just ordered the deraillor from Harris cyclery. I
hope this all works .The brakes seam like they should be ok .With the
shorter LX levers.

front derailer is hardly difficult even with friction.

That's what I've done for the front shifting on my Xtracycle.[1] The
right shifter is an eight speed trigger shifter of unknown caliber. On
one hand, it's kind of an ugly mismatched setup, but on the other hand
it shifts really well. Thinking about it, part of the design of my
grocery bike is to *be ugly* so this is really an advantage.

[1] Part of a pair of flat bar shifters from Nashbar ($6) I bought a
while ago. The left is friction, the right is 5 or 6 speed.

But SRAM multiple detent twist shifters work fine with road front
derailers. The lateral movement of the cage is small enough for each
detent that chain to cage rubbing can almost always be "trimmed" away,
even with 62/52/39 chainrings.
