Hi everyone. I'm trying to get my front derailleur setup for a ride tomorrow but am having trouble. The chain is rubbing against the derailleur cage in the "granny gear." On closer inspection, it looks like a plastic piece on the cage, near the limit adjustment screws, is hitting the seat tube before the cage moves far enough to get away from the chain. The derailleur is a Shimano Deore (not sure which one specifically) on an Iron Horse Warrior Race. If lucky, you might get it to work by rotating the derailleur around the frame element. A tiny amount may be all it needs. But if its far, you run risk of chain not running straight through the cage.
Next option is to move the front rings out a fraction. Should be possible to get a spacer washer to fit between the RH bottom bracket cup and the frame. Thinnest washer you can find should do it (I'm thinking 0.5 or 1.0 mm). This requires removal of cranks (probably both sides), then taking out the RH bottom bracket cup (or the cartridge) to fit the washer.

I used a Shimano Sora double front derailleur on a triple crankset with a short as I could get bottom bracket. Front derailleur hit the seattube before shifting to the inner ring. I was able to get it to shift in far enough by grinding off parts of the front derailleur. See if what is hitting the seattube is essential and could be ground off to allow the front derailleur to move inwards enough.

Grind it off to fit. It doesn't do anything. It's some sort of cover I think.

I thought about doing that. I still might but I am thinking about just getting a better derailleur. After reading some reviews at mtbr.com, it sounds like a better derailleur might perform better all together. I'm thinking about getting the Shimano XT FD-M761. From what I can see in the picture, it has a much cleaner design that would stay away from the frame a little better. Can any who own one comment on whether that's true or not?

Why is that? I think it looks like it might be better because the arm that the cage is attached to isn't "trapped" between the cage and the frame. That seems to be causing clearance problems now. It could be that the chain rings are too near to the seat tube but the clearance between the crank arms and the frame are good so I don't really want to mess with that too much.
Look at the two. it is stiffer. Topswing unit is a cheap sheetmetal piece. It's because of chainguards and full suspension pivots why they 'invented' that cheap piece of junk. If there is a choice choose the downswing.

Too late. I ordered an XT FD-D761 downswing last night. Looks like a better design and the cage looks a lot more rigid. I was never impressed with the plain old Deore I have now so even if I could have gotten it to work, I think I will like this one better. I got it for a good price too. Most places wanted about $45 and the Trek Store wanted almost $90. I found it online for $31 (new from a store, not on eBay) and I used the $10 credit from signing up for Google Checkout to cover shipping and then some. All together it cost me $28 so I'm willing to give it a try. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that the clamp doesn't get in the way of the lower water bottle cage mount.
By the way, to anyone who might be reading this later on, the XT down swing derailleur I ordered is awesome. It stays away from the seat tube (which means the "low" screw can actually be adjusted properly) and shifts great. Well worth it, even if I had paid the normal retail price.
