From Disc to V's

I have. I had Avid mechanicals on my freeride bike, which I really liked a lot. When I renounced
freeriding and went back to XC, I sold the bike with discs, and my new XC bike has V brakes on it.

I preferred the performance of disc brakes. The extra weight wasn't an issue for me. The price of
disc brakes is too high though. I bought an Avid V-brake kit (front and rear calipers + levers +
cables & fittings) for $25. They stop me well, but not with the same confidence as discs. If money
was no object, I'd go back to discs... and get the Magura Martas or Avid Juicy 7.

I did. I was running shimano xt discs. They were really loud (many people tried to shut them up to
no avail) and honestly I wasn't all that impressed with the performance. I've been doing more
trialsy stuff and they aren't any more/less powerful than v's when it comes to locking up the wheel.
If I was riding at higher speeds then I'd probably go back, but they just weren't that much better
than v's at low speeds.

Yes. My first pair were true [censored]. I went back to Vs and I couldn't believe how much better
they were. I couldn't even stoppie with the disc brakes, even with all weight forward over the
front wheel.

I don't believe I could have locked the rear either.

I would rather have discs because I can never keep my wheels true.

I do every time I switch bikes from my dualie, which has discs, to my SS which has v's. And every
time I notice the lack of modulation and precision in braking performance as much as lack of
suspension. Lack of gears is a distant third. --dt

Nope, never will.My Hope C2's are powerful,quiet ,drag free,easy to adjust on the fly for lever
feel, minimal maintenance and they work consistantly in the wet and with a couple of broken spokes.
Whenever i got our local sandy mud on my v-brakes it sounded like i was trying to stop with a couple
of blunt screwdrivers against the rim.

ah well, was thinking of biting the bullet and getting some hope mini's. but i know some ppl still
prefer V's so i just thought i would see if after trying them, they went back to V's in disgust.

Just gone from Avid Arch-Rivals to Hope Minis. Although they still haven't bedded in properly yet,
the difference in power is awesome.

I've been running Hope Mini's since they first came out about 2 years ago. Excellent stoppers, get
them. I can't imagine going back to V's now.

Never switched to discs but have tried several. A few feel really good and these are the ones that
stand out from V's.

EXCEPT the Avid Ultimates.

Avid Ults also stand out from all the other Avid V's, and Shimano XTR's. Must admit I haven't tried
many other V's outside of these 2 brands. But as it is, Avid Ults satisfy my quest for excellent
modulation and effortless fingering.

Hi,

I've got Magura Louise disc brakes mounted on my fully, and Magura HS33 (comparable with XT
V-brakes) on my hardtail. V-brakes (rim brakes in general) can't beat the stopping power and
modulation of disc brakes IMHO.

BTW If you want to have the possibility of going back from disc to V, make sure your wheelset is
able to, or at least don't waste your old wheelset. Not all wheels for disc brakes can be used with
V-brakes...

Compared to Hydo disk brakes..V-brakes are le crappe. I hate riding my HT because of the difference.
I am using the 99 xt v. The Avids I am told are "Da Bomb"
