    In case you don't get the CTC email newsletter (what do you
    mean you're not a member? I don't know, apathetic bloody
    planet...)

    Low turnout ensures helmet law stalls

    Eric Martlew's Protective Headgear for Young Cyclists
    Private Member's Bill has failed to go through parliament
    today. The Bill would effectively ban under-16s from
    cycling without helmets anywhere other than in their own
    private gardens, and received its second reading today. A
    low turnout of MPs resulted in the Bill being held over
    to Friday 18th June, when it will join the back of a
    queue of Private Member's Bills waiting to be heard. For
    more information on why CTC has worked to oppose this

    to BBC Breakfast News on BBC1 tomorrow morning at 7.20
    when CTC Campaigns and Policy Manager, Roger Geffen, will
    put our case.

    And I would just like to express thanks and appreciation for
    the work that Roger has put in on this. During the last two
    months every major piece of policy affecting cycling has
    been under review. Fitting in the Martlew bill has been a
    serious drain on resources at a very inopportune time, and
    the team at Cotterell House have been working late into the
    night seven days a week to get everything done. Doing
    nothing was never an option, and work by Roger, ably
    supported by the Usual Suspects, has ensured, for the most
    part, that the helmet zealots have not sabotaged the real
    work either.

    CTCs stance has remained calm and reasonable throughout even
    in the face of extreme provocation (for the full extent of
    this see the letter from Phil and Kevin in the last Cycle).
    I am proud to be a member of the CTC.

    I handed over my membership fee about a week ago, but aside
    from a form email acknowledging payment and providing a
    membership number, I've heard nothing. May be time for a
    quick call!

    I've been a member for 30plus <mumble mumble> years and have
    tried to get the e-mail several times but don't receive it.

    Now is not really time to moan though. The CTC have been
    doing a fantastic job on this. Geffen for President!

    Is this time definite? No way am I getting up that early,
    but I'd like to video it.

    I wish we could pull BeHIT's teeth once and for all,
    preferably by cutting off their funds, to save wasting so
    much time and effort on this issue.

    Conversely, I was auto-subscribed to it by the CTC when I
    volunteered to help with the railway station survey last
    autumn. Repeated attempts to unsubscribe have failed, even
    though I've had replies from Yannick Read (the writer of the
    emails) saying that I would be unsubscribed.

    It's now auto-binned by my spam filters.

    Dear Yannick: I love the CTC logo. I mean, I *really* love
    it, I have it on my h*lm*t cover and everything, and I do
    keep meaning to buy the mug, honest. But is it really
    necessary to send it to me *every* week? It converts what
    could be a sensible couple of k of text into 70k html
    bloatmail, which I only ever read in plaintext anyway.
    Remember, some of us are still on dial-up. Thank you.

    the time to do something... just in time to discover that
    my MP is Alistair Darling. Our beloved Secretary of State
    for Transport is in reciept of an email requesting
    information on his current stance on the matter. Should
    be interesting to see what reply I get, this one should
    be right up his street.

    Maybe they don't like Douglas Adams. My PCs, whether alive

    that I'll get a response at some point from him.

    My original attempt at using faxyourmp.com didn't work -
    they couldn't get through to his fax machine.

    So I sent via the parliament web-site's e-mail facility
    in the end.
