Freewheel removal question

  1. hi guys,

    got a little time over the weekend, have two wheels to choose from.
    have one ready to play with;

    in the second image you can just see a pair of small holes on the side
    of the freewheel on the hub. is this the secret to remove the freewheel
    body off the hub?

    i've picked up a chain whip and can't budge the smallest cogs on the
    freewheel. does it make sense to get another and pull off the smallest
    to get the others off? or does the whole freehub come off with the cogs
    in it?

    Nope, not clear enough. Really need a close up of the smallest cog of
    the cluster so we can see the ring with the two holes and read the
    writing on that ring.

    Nope, it is the secret to taking it apart and replacing the bearings and
    pauls. Lots of them.

    A chainwhip (a second can help) unscrews the cogs off the cluster body,

    Yes. You need the cluster removal tool that is specific to the cluster
    brand and model. It can rang from two chunky (rectangular, not small
    pins) to a multi-splined device.). Take whee to LBS and see if they can
    see you one.

    err, good luck, it looks like you are going to need it from the
    condition of that wheel.

    Have you tried a google for online bicycle books?
    Barnetts (sp?).

  3. I'm pretty sure that's a screw-on cluster, not a cassette, so the whole unit unscrews from the hub in one piece.     If it is a Suntour, the outside cog may unscrew on its own, so it's probably better to hook on to one of the middle cogs, although, it's my understanding that it's best to take clusters off with the small tools, as above. You might bust your chain whip

    I guess you don't wanna hear this, but if you take to a shop tomorrow, they'll get it off in about 5 seconds 🙂

    i just added some better photos of it, it reads "V1 Shimano".

    i have two. the other is the same and in much better condition.
    this is on is for play/test/explore/learn/hopefulynotdestroy, so i can
    not make the mistakes on the good one 😉

    erm ok =) BRB i've found some stuff from the barnets manual but doesn't
    cover these old hubs, lotsa new cassette stuff =/ i'll keep looken =)

    It's a shimano screw-on freewheel, which needs a special splined tool to
    remove it. The retainer with the two holes holds the whole thing
    together. Remove it and you get a floor full of small ball bearings,
    springs and pawls. Ask me how I know ;-)

    As you've heard, take it to the LBS and they will whip it off real
    quick. What's wrong with the wheel that you want to remove the
    freewheel, or do you have a better freewheel to put on it?

    two reasons;
    1) i wanna know how it works
    2) being derailuer free, its currently singlespeed, but i wanna 'fix'
    the bike 😉

    Ok, if you don't want to keep the freewheel, the following will do, no
    special tools required.

    - undo lock ring with small holes in it with a ([censored]) screwdriver (or
    suitable hole punch) and hammer. It is reverse threaded, so you need to
    drive it clockwise to undo.
    - lift off assembly
    - Watch in awe as hundreds of ball bearings topple to the ground..
    remember that you were supposed to put a bucket underneath the wheel.
    - Clamp the freewheel core in a bench vise or large set of multigrips.
    - Undo in the normal (anticlockwise) direction. It is usually enough to
    clamp the core with a vice and use the wheel for leverage.
    - Throw trashed core into rubbish.
