I'll apologise now for the noob question, But just got the MTB bug and at 31 years old maybe a bit late.
I'm looking to buy my first starter bike, and I liked the look at the new Specialized Hardrock Pro 06. Seemed to look like a good chioce on a first bike and retailing at £500 (UK) was the right price. (dual hydraulic disc, SRAM x-7 shifters caught my eye)
The Specialzed come in 15, 17, 19, 21 Inch frame. I'm 5'8 and inside leg of about 31 inch's The bike I have now has a 18 inch frame (should I go for the 17 or 19 inch frame. I'll be riding all mountain trails through woods and bumpy downward forest sections.
Question? Which frame size whould be best?
Is this bike a good starter model? (any other suggestion)
Try them all, though the 15" will probably be too small for you and the 21" too big. I'm 5'7" and ride a 17", but that's just me and my bike.

Go to your local bike shop and get fitted to the bike.

Definitely go to a shop and at least sit on a few sizes, try to do a test ride if you can. I'm pretty much your size. You'll probably fit the 17" best but there's more to fit than the seat tube size. I have 2 hardtail frames...an 18" and 15.5" by different manufacturers. The 15.5 is shorter but actually longer across the top tube. Good luck.
Theres an [censored] in every bunch. Give the bike to a kid. Maybe someone should give him a gun so he can end his pain with a bullet to brain. As for the guy that wants and honest answer. Try them out and what ever size works for you go for it and have fun you bloody well have the right too.
Thx for all the advice, my local store doesn't sell the bike I want, but looks like i'll have to pop down and [censored] my leg over a few and see which one fits best. ;-)
Thx again Mark
PS as for you Ron, i've been driving ambulances for the past 10 years as a SR Paramedic, while you on the other hand are prob still out being pushed around in a pram by your parents ;-)
Kids? a sheesh

Just be aware that not all bikes are created equal and that different manufacturers can use different measurements for the same "size" frame. Exercise some commonsense and caution when hopping on different bikes. -- Westie
