  1. Hi All:

    I have found discrepencies on some web pages about the formula for HBa1C and what each value
    translates to, could someone tell me which is correct.

    One site says that when HbA1C is 7.1 that translates to the average blood sugar being around 140.
    However, another site says that if the HbA1C is 7.0 that BG is 170.

    Which one is correct?

    Thanks! Scott

    In my opinion both are probably right for some people. There is only a rough correlation between
    average blood glucose and A1c. There have been extensive discussions here about how best to
    correlate the two but there are several problems, most important is that everyone's body is
    different. Others include the quality of the blood glucose data and the testing method used to
    determine the A1c. Perhaps if someone finally comes out with an accurate continuous blood glucose
    monitoring system, capable of operating for weeks at a time it may be possible to get a better
    correlation.

  3. Scott - check threads in this ng. Hba1c measures the sugar sticking to red blood cells, I believe -
    and may have more to do with peaks in BG than avg BG.

    The latest correlation (and presumably the best since it is based on more test subjects) favors
    the 170 value, i.e.

    bG = 35.6 x HbA1c - 77.3

    or, for HbA1c of 7.1

    bG = 35.6 x 7.1 - 77.3 = 175 mg/dL

    see

    care.diabetesjournals.org275

    for the article.

    However, R-squared is only 0.67 which is "not too hot" which you can see in the scatter in the
    graphs which plot the actual data.

  5. I’ve got a “home-cooked” formula that works for me.......... I take a reading at the *same
    time* every day(when I wake up).........then average them for the previous 90 days and divide the
    result by 20.2 I’ve used this for a year, had 4 blood workups and was right on the head with 3 of
    the lab results, missed by 0.1 on the 4th........... YMMV..........

    I just looked at my approximation chart, and found 7.1 to to go with 175, however, if I looked at it
    the wrong way, by looking at the A1c number and looking above it on the chart for my result, as
    opposed to looking below it, on the chart, which is the correct way to read it, I would have thought
    the number was 140.

  7. damn Al, you just had to go depress me even more.. eh? here i thought i was doing semi ok with my
    a1c at 7.8 yeah had lots going on.. didn't bother with control. i'm one foot in the grave and the
    other on a banana peel.

    my meter didn't lie then, my 30day avg was 194.. a1c of 7.8 comes to 200.39

    that's a one touch ultra.
