  1. OK. I've only had this gadget a couple of weeks but I've noticed that the number of Calories burned
that it tells me--even on identical runs-- aren't even close! Last Saturday (the first time I'd used
it), on a 6 mile run in 60 minutes it told me that I'd burned about 1700 calories. Today, with the
same run (in 59 minutes), it told me 300 calories. In other 6 mile runs over a different (flat)
course, I seem to be getting numbers closer to 300.

It seems to be consistent with the reported distances over runs in the same course.

Now, I googled and found a few tables that told me that 1000-1100 (interpolating by guess) is
    more correct.

Any other Forerunner gadgeteers getting similar erratic numbers?

If that's the case, you're a big runner. The numbers are about weight * miles / 1.37

  3. I don't have a forerunner but I've seen similar results from my Cardiosport Ultima before I had my
Resting, Ambient and Maximum heart rates set correctly. Could your problem be similar?

Which would put me at about 920 ... so I guess that seems reasonable.

I'd like to be a little less big!

The Forerunner doesn't support heart rates, only weight--which was set appropriately...

Other than this oddity, it's a pretty nice device, excepting perhaps that it takes too long to
satelite sync the gps when you first turn it on, expecially if you're standing right next to a
    building (while still outdoors).

Presuming that this was a serious criticism, the Forerunner 201 is NOT an automobile, but a small
gps device made by Garmin, Inc. that keeps track of one's runs, speed, distance and calories
    burned, etc....
