A couple of years ago I nearly took a flat by the river (a tributary of the Tamar), with very
limited road access. It had occurred to me to consider getting - or making - something vaguely like
that for everyday transport. It would have had to be something much lower - more canoe than bike -
to cope with the rapids, and with doing longer distances on water.

Of course, riding such a thing upstream any distance would have been way beyond the capabilities of
my unfit body - so back to the road for the return journey. OTOH just being able to cross the
estuary and ride on the (fairly isolated) Bere Peninsula would have instantly avoided the
ugly-main-road bits of getting out of the big city.
