You can do and say whatever you want on a newsgroup. That's the whole point.
There are no moderators or "governing authorities". Though many will try to
tell you otherwise.

On the other hand, I do not believe Mr. Sherman and I are nearly so
destructive of a newsgroup as would be a lot of For Sale notices, most
especially if commercial dealers were to get involved. I think it is OK to
post an item for sale if it is your personal item, but if it is not, then it
is not OK. We do not want to become a flea market.

I sometimes browse other newsgroups just to see what I might be missing. Too
much buying and selling will absolutely ruin any newsgroup whereas a good
exchange of opinion, whether on-topic or off-topic, ensures the health of
the newsgroup. After all, we do not all want to die of boredom just because
we are looking in on a newsgroup.

I have seen the occasional FS post and nobody seems to mind. But I
think you will get more visibility if you post on a bent classified.

As is well known, I never look up anything, the prerogative of a former
librarian. Mr. Sherman will no doubt supply us with the information you
want. I suspect traffic is way down, but traffic is not the be all and the
end all of a newsgroup. I would say the quality of the posts is what
matters, and most particularly the kind of trash posts that used to be
ubiquitous on ARBR are now thankfully few and far between. If we are now rid
of those trash posts, then the newsgroup is a far better place even if there
are fewer overall posts.
