I said to you in an earlier thread that I would let you know either way whether my next batch of pemmican turned out. Well, it turned out great! I used a blender to break up the spiced beef jerky. Then, mixed in an almost equal amount of rendered fat and added a good amount of dried ground blueberries. I then put all of it through my hand operated meat grinder. Tastes great and no gritty consistency like my first batch. There was no problem putting it through the meat grinder, as it was nice and greasy and it went through almost effortlessly. Even my wife said it was O.K., although I doubt whether she would eat it on a regular basis. I'm going to make a lot more of it this coming winter and keep some with me at work for a quick meal when there is no access to food. I'll just wrap it in plastic and put it in a hard container so it doesn't get mushed. Thanks for your suggestions in the past. If you hadn't posted about your trials and renewed my interest, I probably would have not bothered. Now I have a handy snack that doesn't require refrigeration or cooking and can last for years if wrapped properly to keep out moisture. Tom 210/180/180

I've never seen it in a health food store, but did see some in a native craft shop on our holidays many years ago. I never bothered to try it. 'Wish I would have. I don't know if there is any commercial stuff around here in Calgary. There is a link on Ray Audette's site to a manufacturer. I did see some shredded beef and pork in the Oriental section of Superstore, but there was quite a few chemicals and preservatives on the label so I didn't buy any. I'm a little concerned about commercially made pemmican as well. I'll have to drop in some time to that craft shop next time I'm headed towards Banff. Maybe there still selling pemmican there. It would be interesting to try someone elses to compare it with mine. Tom

Ray says in his book, on page 81, that pemmican is the perfect workout food for the paleo athlete who can't carbo-load. Interesting!

Yes, I know what you mean. Last time I went over to a friends house for dinner, they were serving soy burgers 'cause they new I was dieting. I ate some nuts and cheese before going over just in case there wasn't anything I could eat. I had the soy burger with no bun and salad. I didn't want to offend anyone by not eating anything since they made it especially for me. Not as good as real hamburger. Oh well. Live and learn. Have a good trip. And thanks again for your help. Yeah, he basically says you can live off the stuff indefinitely....and not suffer ill effects.
