  1. In the last three or so weeks my left foot has been painful. The skin of
the outside of the foot hurts, sometimes when it's streched in a certain
way - though I can't actually replicate that right now - and if I cycle
hard on it it becomes increasingly uncomfortable. The skin is not sore
to touch, though it feels a little odd, almost slightly numb. My right
    foot feels fine.

I think it's related to my cycling shoes - a pair of ALDI Crane shoes,
which are really a size too big. Does that sound plausible?

Am I likely to cure this by buying another better-fitting and probably
rather more expensive pair, or am I going to find that my left foot is
    not cycle-shoe-compatible?

FWIW, I wear exactly the same shoes, slightly oversize, much of the time
and have never experienced any problem with foot discomfort. I did have
trouble with foot pain early on when I started using SPDs. I cured it
by adjusting the cleat position until I got it right.

  3. Bear in mind that sciatica, that is irritation of a nerve up in the
lumbar spine, quite often starts with sensations of burning, tingling
or tearing in the heel or foot and can be confusing for a while. That is
    very common.
Can you provoke it by lying down and lifting your straight leg with the
foot dorsiflexed, or bending forward at the hips, with straight legs,
    to touch the floor ?
Other sites of nerve compression down the leg exist, but the fit of
your shoes is my next guess. Also check saddle hight and position which
might be altered to improve any of the problems outside the shoe.

No - not exactly. But thanks, because in fact I have done it once or
twice in bed, so I lay down on the floor as you suggested and pointed my
foot around. I pointed it to the left and <ouch>. It feels as if I have
stretched the skin too far (and it felt temporarily sore on the spot,
    too).

  5. I think you will have to wait and see for a bit, meanwhile taking care
of your back and making your cycling position a bit more back
friendly. In spite of there being other places in your leg to squash a
nerve the back is the most common by far.If you start getting more
widespread sensations up the leg that will confirm it.
I cannot be definite about anything at this range of course! One can
    only generalise here.
If the shoes are big it seems to me unlikely they would be causing
    compression problems.

I developed a similar feeling in a wide patch along the knuckles of my
right foot. Then I started sometimes getting the same feeling along
the outer edges of my hands. After discovering I had diabetes it took
several months of keeping my blood sugar under control (just by diet)
    for these feelings to disappear.

I got this in the early days of 'bent riding; it was reduced by
loosening the Velcro on my shoes but only really cured by wearing
wider shoes. I suspect that you are right, in that the thing which
changed (the shoes) caused the problem. It's not a cheap/expensive
thing, it's a foot shape thing. After several uncomfortable attempt I
have concluded that Shimano shoes are simply not built for me; when I
went to Cotswold in Reading to buy a pair of walking boots I was
astonished at the time and effort they went to to get the fit exactly
right - nobody in any bike shop has ever displayed that level of
knowledge of how different products fit different feet (but then, most
bike shops only stock two or three brands of shoe).

I am tempted to go back to Carnac, I had a pair of their leather shoes
for many years which fitted really well, but I have never got round to
looking up whether they make clipless-compatible ones.
