  1. Hiya folks,

I need some help. I got an intestinal bug this weekend, and it is
taking it's time to go away. I am still not keeping much down, and
what I do keep down, decides to hang out in my stomach and near
environs and torment me. The other end is getting better, but my
    tummy is still very sensitive.

I am racking my brains on what I can eat, that won't cause havoc. At
    least something.

So far, I have tried jello, crackers, beef broth, toast. The toast
woke me up this morning, after spending a few hours in my stomach. I
felt like I was going to die. I haven't tried the plain boiled potato
that Arri suggested, yet. The broth made me feel ill an hour or so
    later. Same with the jello.

Gingerale, plain sparkling water, and hot tea will stay down and not
    bother me.

    Got suggestions?

Must you eat? That's a serious question. With what you've described,
I'd stick with the gingerale, plain sparkling water, and hot tea. Maybe
add a few Tablespoons of gatorade. When you're feeling better after a
few days, try the beef broth and toast again. As long as you don't get
dehydrated, you should be O.K. without food for several days.

Of course, there are people who can't/shouldn't fast. If you're
diabetic or have a history of anorexia or some other condition that
precludes not eating, call your doctor.

If the symptoms persist for more than a few days, call your doctor.
Do you know what's causing it? Do you come down with it often? A trip
to the doctor might be in order anyway.

If I didn't have to work, I could skip eating. I already called into
    work tonight.

It wouldn't do to have a nurse who is fainting due to lack of
    food....LOL.

BRAT, Christine. You know... Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea?

Yeah, fainting over that isolette would be frowned on.. LOL.

I've been caring for a sick friend with the same problem since Friday. My
doctor always suggests the same BRAT diet you give kids in this condition:
    Bananas
    Rice
    Apple sauce
    Tacos

No..wait. Toast is the last one. It may not stay down, but at least they're
not foods that make you sick to think about.

MORE IMPORTANT: The adult version of Pedialyte is Gatorade. I hate most of
the flavors, but there's one called AM blend - orange in color, and it
tastes like weak Tang. Actually not bad. My friend says it doesn't bother
    her to drink it.

Yeah, I was trying to remember what was in that diet. I will try that
    route.

I can't afford to call in anymore. I get no sick pay, and being on a
contract, I can't call in very much. After 3 call-ins, my contract
will be cancelled. I felt bad about calling in today, as the NICU is
very busy, but I really felt like death warmed over. I go back to
work on Wednesday night, so maybe this will have passed by then, and I
will be able to keep a bit of food down without being very
    uncomfortable.

For what it is worth, I haven't had this over 40 years....

Sometimes those drinks can cause more problems because of the high sugar
content. When it reaches the bowels the sugar draws more water into the
bowels which can at times exacerbate a runny tummy. Go easy on 'em.

Looks like I have to bestir myself to make a run to get these things.
I do have rice in the house..

Not sure I can stomach anything right now though...

  9. Hi Christine,

When I worked in pediatrics, the diet for an upset stomach was called
the BRAT DIET: bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. These foods are
not necessarily to be eaten all at once. It has worked for me.

    Hope you feel better,

    Ellie

Rice, bananas, toast and applesauce. Also known as the BRAT diet but you
can eat them in any order you please.

Get a couple of cans of Campbell's Firehouse Chili, for testing purposes
when you think you're better. Results will be clear.

Oh...plain scrambled eggs, too. If some peckerhead here comes along and says
"tarragon", I'll kill them for you if you like. This is no time for
    tarragon.

Believe it or not..... apple cider vinegar
A little easier to handle, Alpen Bitters diluted with water is a great
    herbal remedy.

Just making some plain pasta as we speak, for my poor queasy Agent

More toast, dark toast will absorb some of the toxins from the bacteria.
Ginger (pickled, candied etc) also settles things.

I would avoid regular tea, because it is likely to lead to acid stomach,
especially with little or no food. Peppermint tea or ginger tea with some
honey might do good things for your digestion as well as giving you some
calories. Gingerale is usually good (I would go for regular gingerale, not
diet, on this occasion.) Regular Coke is of course the classic
stomach-settling thing. Flat is supposedly better.

As for food, I think crackers of the saltine type are recommended. Another
possibility is plain white rice. (That's the top remedy for dogs with
    diarrhea. <G>😉

The other recommended thing is Pedialyte. I've never had it, myself, so I
don't know how it tastes. I suppose that Gatorade is similar, although I
find the addition of food coloring and so on suspect. And I've hated it when
I tasted it--but lots of people like it.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    (Dry, no butter or jam)

Pure honey will give you a little energy and may calm thy stomach. Take a
    tablespoon.

If all else fails - maybe a little organic apple cider vinegar.

Both together (warmed) may not even hurt.

Your tummy will tell you when you can eat. Until then, stick with the
crackers and ginger ale. You can also try some plain chicken broth. First
day of eating for me is generally Ramen noodles, chicken flavor -- maybe
half of the package. See how that goes and then in 6-8 hours start adding
more mild foods. Rice with something. Trust me on this. Don't eat until
you feel hungry, you are just asking to be punished..

Plain oatmeal. Good old fashioned oatmeal, not quick or instant. No
sugar, milk, etc. Kinda coats, soothes and absorbs. Suggested that to a
friend who overdid it at a party once and he was quite surprised how
    well it worked.

Woops. I get the people on usenet mixed up with one another. I forgot
that you're a nurse. Would 4 days on a liquid diet leave you fainting
from lack of calories? That sounds like a problem right there. Is it
O.K. for nurses to go to work when they're sick? I should think that
the patients who are already weak or suseptible to illness in some way
would be at greater risk if the people caring for them were sick.
Unless you're sure of what's causing your stomach bug, you can't be
certain it isn't contagious. It sucks that the system is set up so you
can't take the time off you need when ill.
