My gf, my kids and her kids are headed over to a huge reservoir for the
weekend. We'll water ski, fish, sit around camp fires and do some day
hiking. It's a KOA with showers and a swimming pool. Does that count as
compassionate for those that were ordered to leave and didn't so they could
stay and loot the city?

And I don't mean to make this a race issue, but I have yet to see white
looters on the news. I'm not racist, but I would have my head in the sand
if I didn't notice they're all black. Do white people live there? I've
never been there, so I have no idea.

No Canadian looters either. But you ask "do they live there" right
after mentioning the looting is done by those who didn't leave. Those
who stayed are not representative of the New Orleans population.
They're likely to be more poor etc. which would correlate with race.

less than a third of people in New Orleans are white, and the average salary
for white people is nearly three times what it is for black people. The
looters are the people who were unable to get out of the city (mainly the
poor ones) who think they need valuable stuff and are willing to loot
(mainly the poor ones).

buses. They could have saved those vehicles and 50x50 people if they'd
just taken them out of the city. (To where, though? Where is better
than taking your chances at home if you don't have any money or support
system outside of the city?)

So in large part the poorest, least resourceful people are left to fend
for themselves. Looting only makes sense when it's to get needed
supplies that are going to spoil, anyway.

A reliable source (I'll give you the link in a moment) says that they've
got eyewitness confirmation of police "looting". They're breaking into
arms stores to secure the arms before criminals do, ostensibly. They're
also liberating supplies for broader distribution.

The blogs are making it sound like nearly everyone left behind had
limited mobility and are insulin dependent diabetics.

Besides poor mobility (oxygen dependent, etc.) the other people left
behind were people with pets. The buses and shelters wouldn't take
dogs. Would you leave your dog behind?

Oh, by the way, it's not just poor people or stupid people there, it's
also people there to protect and serve. The bloggers I've mentioned
make it pretty clear that there are people bootstrapping the place back
into civilization. Also, there are a whole [censored] of pretty [censored]
tourists. A Spanish Member of Parliament is there, for example,
text-messaging away a storm to her embassy. The airport is filled with
people who can't get out and the airlines aren't servicing it even
thought the runways are clear. It'd be losing money to deadhead one leg
of the trip, i.e, fly the planes in empty. (Though it seems like
there'd be rescue workers enough to fill them.)

So have fun drinking and fishing and laughing at all those poor people
having the tragedy of their lives. Sure is a good thing you're too
superior for Nature to drop kick you in the ass like it did them.

As Mike said, New Orleans is gone. You really shouldn't rely on blogs
for your news.

Where are the airplanes going to refuel? Almost all the fuel is

Rescuing NOLA is hard. There are logistical problems. But WTF is FEMA
for if not to get planes on the ground, get food and water to the
convention center, get the corpses off the streets? Where the hell ARE

One of the questions in New Orleans tonight is just how long does it
take to mobilize the army. They're being really, really slow to show
up. It's Day 4 and there's still no food or water at the convention
center nor buses transporting them out. The Times-Picayne is reporting
that two babies have died there as well as a couple of older people,
apparently from dehydration.

I'll go even further: To hell with whether it's going to spoil or
not. Stranded in the middle of a disaster area, no help evident,
hungry, and there's a supermarket. Or you need medical supplies and

That being said, I hardly think television sets, other electronics,

justified as necessary for survival.

I don't think shooting at National Guard helicopters can be justified
as necessary for survival.

I don't think sniping at rescue vehicles trying to evacuate a
no-longer-viable shelter is necessary for survival.

I don't think setting buildings afire is necessary for survival.

Something has gone seriously wrong with this country, and it has not
a damn thing to do with being poor.

The next time somebody asks me why I'm such a staunch supporter of
the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, why I believe in the necessity to be
able to defend ones self in this day and age, I'll just remind them
of New Orleans, August and September, 2005. I mentioned this to
someone today. "Why?" I was asked, "So you could join them?" "No,"
I replied, "So I could defend you and me and other law-abiding
citizens from them."

IMO, anybody caught carting away blatantly non-essential loot should
be shot on sight and left to die. Such creatures are a cancer and a
blight on society.

Of course she's going! We haven't had a pee accident in days either.

She's into fetching now. Loves it. And I think I told you, but she has
moved to just hand signals for sit, stay, down and come. She actually likes
working on her training. When we're done with training, I use the words
"all done", which releases her and she runs around the yard full speed, then
comes and attacks me with her tongue floppy out of the side of her mouth.
This is great.

I've been to New Orleans.
I'd say at least 1/2 the population is black...
There is a rather high poverty level also in Louisianna.
