It could -- but it doesn't. And it shouldn't, because the injected
flu vaccine doesn't contain live virus and can't give you the flu.

illness, but it certainly didn't prevent it!!! The prevalent strain of the
flu is not even in the vaccine-- I doubt if it provides much protection.

Or it could be read: Flu virus attacks because the world is flat.

As we know, the world is not flat. And the flu vaccination does not cause
    the flu.

As we also know, the vaccination is not 100% effective, and unfortunately,
the vaccine is not a great match for the most common strain of influenza
    going around.

I feel horrible for the family and the loss of the child.

The flu vaccination did not cause or "contribute to" the flu that caused
this child's death. Your "doubt if it provides much protection" is ill
founded. This year's vaccine still produces excellent immunity to the
strains of flu virus that are included in its formulation. Those strains are
still in circulation and it is well worth getting a shot to be protected
against them. Did you think they just voluntarily disappeared to make room
for Influenza A-H2N3 'Fugian' to become the prevalent strain this year? That
flu is the most prevalent because the others have been effectively
    suppressed by the vaccination program.

Maybe so. The flu seems to be one step ahead of the vaccine. So the flu shot
this year seems to protect against the *old* varieties of flu-- probably the
same ones I already have immunity to-- and apparently not as deadly as the
    current flu.

I will amend my statement to say that I doubt if it provides much protection
for the newer, prevalent, more deadly form of flu. A good example of that is
the poor kid that died. Obviously it provides protection for the flu that was
prevalent last year and a minority of people have this year.

The incubation period for influenza is much shorter than "a few weeks," so
that makes two reasons that your flu was not caused by the vaccination. The
first is that there is no live virus in flu vaccine.

A flu shot cannot cause the flu. Period.

Correct, for the flu shot, that is. The intranasal vaccine IS a live

A flu shot cannot cause the flu. Period.

"heppiechik" has a few things to consider. First, was the illness she
called "the flu" really the flu? Many people refer to vomiting and
diarrhea as "the flu," whereas influenza is a severe respiratory
illness marked by high fevers, significant cough, headache, sore
throat, body aches, and malaise with minimal runny/stuffy nose. Even
with those symptoms, it may not be the flu, as there are many flu-like
viruses for which the flu vaccine does not provide protection.

The flu shot may cause the feeling of a viral prodrome a day or two
after getting it. I tell people that for the next day or so they may
actually feel like they're coming down with something and then it goes
away. (I experienced that myself after my first dose of hepatitis B
vaccine.) I wonder if this myth that the flu shot causes the flu comes
from people exaggerating mild symptoms like that.

One last thing to consider: We begin flu shot season right at the
beginning of cold season. With colds running rampant through the
schools and spilling into the community in the fall while thousands of
people line up for flu shots, it is statistically nearly impossible
that NO ONE will just happen to come down with something after they
get the shot. Of that percentage of people who do, a certain
percentage of them will believe that the shot did it to them, and one
will be unable to convince them otherwise. They then propagate the
myth that the flu shot gives you the flu.

Exactly. And since they propagate it to everybody they know, pretty soon
everybody knows somebody who knows somebody that got the flu from the flu
shot. It's like an urban legend.

Except for all the studies that show that vaccines cause the body to make
antibodies and that the antibodies prevent measles. The rate of measles has
declined nearly 100% in well-vaccinated countries, although there are still
outbreaks in areas where the rates of vaccination are lower. I don't know

Actually, we know in our hearts and brains that vaccines do not cause
autism. Various studies have been done comparing the rates of autism between
people who are vaccinated and those who are not, and the studies show that
vaccination does not cause autism. In addition, there is no plausible
mechanism to show how vaccination can cause autism. A study by the National

just about every valid scientific study done on this.
