Sounds like the team has grounds to cancel his contract, or perhaps
    even seek restitution.

Yeah, I wish Floyd all the best, but find the timing of these articles
curious. Perhaps he and his agent are trying to drum up public support
in the event of a contract dispute...Or are they seeking to defend an
anticipated fade in the Tour? Again, I hope Floyd has a successful
operation and can return to cycling.

I found the timing to be suspicious too. Now Floyd (and his team
jersey) will get immense coverage from the press, not unlike when Tyler
rode so well despite having had a broken bone.

Ditching Floyd after this would be like shooting a puppy.

Phonak is looking for a new sponsor - it's more likely
Floyd and the team cooperated for the publicity, than that
    it's Floyd against the team.

If Floyd finishes on the podium, somebody will hire
him next year even with a hip replacement.

I thought whacking puppies was Tyler's job.

Don't you need Floyd to like, sign for that, or something?

Well, no, but he was Tyler's dog, so I assume Tyler held power of
attorney (or whatever). Hmmm... but his soul... maybe we need to
    reprise the Jewish vampire problem.

I suppose we can expect certain people here to be telling us that the
    doctor's papers were postdated.

You've been on crack for so long you think it's legal.

Revelation of Landis' condition will no doubt help, if Landis
fades from contender status at this year's TdF. Landis is a strong
rider, and despite the need for a hip replacement, other teams would
probably be glad to hire him. As long as Floyd hasn't used doping, I
expect that Phonak will not have much to dispute with him. His
performance since signing with Phonak has been reasonably successful,
not even taking into account his hip injury.

It is more likely that this is a Public Relations gambit, that is
being played to enhance his marketability, especially in mainstream US
culture. Now (assuming that he manages to win the TdF this year) there
are 3 synergistic "hooks" that make the Landis story compelling to the
    media:

    1) Landis has won the Tour de France. America loves a winner.

    2) Landis comes from a Mennonite background. Nice human interest angle,
with a backstory on the psychological struggle and sacrifices needed to
break with the Mennonite community, and enter "The World"

    3) Landis overcomes a painful, career-threatening injury. Obviously not
as dramatic (or as marketable) as Lance's struggle against cancer.
There isn't going to be any "Hip Replacement" awareness bracelets. But
to have any chance of creating a strong "brand" of oneself in the MSM,
an American Pro Cyclist must demonstrably overcome adversity. Merely
winning the TdF is simply not enough for iconic status.

Tyler Hamilton had been finessing his image, by pumping up the
"cute" angle, associated with the Tugboat narrative, where his dog was
practically a full-fledged member of the family. Tyler and Tugboat
would have gone over well on Leno. Sure beats having to sport a
ridiculous beard, a la Alexi Lalas.

I've broken my hip as well, but was fortunate that the break occured
further away from the bone's blood supply. It was quite a shock to go
from a simple fall in the rain to hearing an x-ray tech say "yep,
broken hip...you might need a hip replacement operation today" all
    within 90 minutes.

Amazing that Floyd was able to recover as well as he did as quickly as
he did after he first broke it. He must have worked his ass off in
    rehab.

I broke my femural neck too, and was thinking it was not very serious.
Then the ER doc said, "we've gotta go in right now, we're gonna try and
save your hip." Inside I was totally freaking out. Fortunately, there
was very little displacement, but even then, they never know for sure.
The ortho later refused to do a scan that might show whether there was
any disruption to the blood flow, he just said "don't worry, we'll all
know in 6 months or so whether you're keeping it." Totally nerve
    wracking. (Kept it).

This is the part that confuses me. My ortho said from the get-go that
I was lucky that I did not break it closer to the blood supply. Yet he
said that (as with most femoral neck breaks) that it broke clean
through. Breaking the hip is like whacking a heavy crystal object with
a hammer. It might not break apart or displace, but the fracture is
clean-through. Where is this portion of the bone being supplied with
blood? From beneath? Or is there a hole closer to the top of the
femoral neck where blood vessels enter?

  11. maybe he hopes people will underestimate him because of hip injury. if
i was his competition I'd have someone crash into his bad side.
