I'm familiar with bike lanes in Boston ... they suck.
They do more harm than good. They're decidedly bike
UNfreindly, especially since they reside in the door zone
most of the time.

However the bike lanes in FL may be a different story,
can you provide any links to more solid information from
both sides?

Where I come from, they're called "fire breaks". People who
have the woods coming right up to the house are the selfish
ones ... it puts firefighters lives in more danger.

if it is in the door zone. The more room to maneuver the
better, IMHO.

Yeah, but it depends. If they don't widen the street, or
have it -in- the plan, or remove on-street parking and
stopping, the BFB (big, uh friendly busses) will cut into
your bike lane to do pickups or drop offs, (which added
to an existing street width will be 1/3 of the optimal
width for the lane), adding to the possibility that the
unwary rider will just be crushed by some large metallic
object'd art. ;-)

It may be better to just take over the sidewalks in those
areas, like downtown where space is limited. But beware
elevators, pull outs and deliver chutes.

Boycott an entire state???? Are you insane?

Hey, I live in Florida and any attempt to hurt Florida's tourism is a direct attack against my way of life. Besides, why boycott an entire state for 2300 residents in 5 different towns (according to the article)? That equates to 460 people in each town that doesn't want 5' bikes lanes but are willing to have 3' lanes. Arn't you over re-acting? I'll bet I could find 460 residents in just about every town in America that thinks bicyclist shouldn't have 5' lanes.

Where I live, green, water thirsty lawns are not necessary
for fire break, you can remove the close trees and scrub
brush without having to replace it with no native grasses.
In fact, exactly where I live.

That's right, Bob. You and your money just stay right there
in Hammond, Indiana. We have all the Yankees we need telling
us how they do it "back home."

For those who are not familiar with the stretch of A1A in
dispute, a lot of residents have built fences or walls as
close to the street as possible to keep the unwashed masses
from their property. Problem is, most of the fences and
walls are built on FDOT right of way. Some of the residents
feel like they have gained ownership or at least
prescriptive rights to the right of way since the structures
have been there for years and they have never been
challenged.

There are a number of reasons why a statewide boycott is
the best plan of attack. It's a state agency, the FDOT,
that should be putting its foot down against the greedy self-
centered NIMBYs. A statewide boycott will have more
economic impact. A statewide boycott will make an example
out of Palm Beach County; if every county in Florida feels
some sting from the boycott they will try not to repeat the
same mistake.

Personally I don't care if one Floridian or all of them
think cyclists shouldn't have 5' bike lanes. I only care if
the FDOT listens to them and builds sub-standard bike lanes.

Wow, so you obviously live in "bike utopia", huh Bob. All major roads clearly have 5' bike lanes (obviously 3' lanes aren't big enough) and all motor vehicles yeild to cyclist. That's great Bob, please enlighten the rest of us on how you managed to collect enough taxes to pay for this and get motorist to participate 100%. Better yet, where is this "bike utopia"?

Bob lives in Hammond, Indiana, from which he provides
guidance on how the rest of the world should live. I have
run across his sophomoric drivel on this ng and a listserve
in Kentucky. I have never been to Hammond but, since there
are no local problems for Bob to address, it must be heaven
for bicyclists.

Bob reminds me of a guy in my neighborhood when I was
growing up. His favorite game was a variation on "let's you
and him fight."

Not really jumping into this fight, but FWIW, they'd have to
trim at least a foot off the bike lanes in the Phoenix,
Arizona east valley to make them 5' wide. Motorists don't
participate at quite 100% (had one do a stupid right turn
across my path today for example, though they were at least
trying to miss me in the process), but certainly a lot
better than the motorists along A1A in Florida (though
they're really only really obnoxious for the first month
after the snowbirds arrive and get used to bikes on the
roads again).

Congradulations, you obviously knew more about the 13 year
old boy's case than the jury. Personally I don't have a
problem with the justice system in this country but I
respect those you don't like it. I just wish people would
look at thier own local government (this type of case could
have been anywhere in the country) before critisizing others
since your court systems are based on juries as well
(assuming your in the U.S.).
