Flatest shoes??

<< What are the best shoes out there (other than custom, R7, etc.) for flat
feet?? As in, the opposite from Carnac (ouch!!)!

Shimano road shoes have a pretty flat insole.
Carnacs have most of the arch molded into the removable insole. Did you try
taking it out and replacing it with a generic insole? Try a Dr. Scholl's foam
insole, or a used pair from your old running shoes. That's what I did.
Do not even think about buying cycling shoes without trying them on first. I
speak from experience on that, too.

I had a pair of Diadora Alu road shoes that were pretty flat. Flattest? I don't know, but certainly more flat than the Sidis I now wear or others I've tried. Diadoras in general might be flat -- seems like I recall Bicycling or some other rag mentioning in a test of their high-end carbon shoes that the footbed of the Diadoras had less "contouring" than the other shoes tested (Shimano and Sidi). Sounds to me like they mean "flatter."

Yet another NOT "flat" definition - Specialized have some contour, but
correctly advertise that they tilt the bottom of your foot so that the
inside is higher than the outside. Bad for my (high arch) feet, probably
good for flat ones.

Same here, currently Sidi Megas and orthotics, the orthotics for 18 years.

Question to you: Are we sure the orthotics help us *while cycling*? I
*know* they help walking, and they have resolved my knee pain issues of
long ago (pain's gone, at any rate), but...

The orthotics don't seem to affect the ball of the foot, and seemingly
that's all that cycling uses.

I'm thinking of trying cycling w/o the orthotics for a bit to see -
wouldn't consider that in my street shoes - the discomfort is immediate.

Any thoughts or experience appreciated.

yea, i think so. they help to keep my foot in a horizontal plane .. before
i was pretty consistently rotating my archside lower moving my knee inwards.
actually i bought them for the first time in the middle of a long tour and
a lot of my problems (hot spots, knee problems) were reduced. i'm sold
from that experience. touring is great for testing equipment.

mine more or less do .. but only after several hundred miles.

My orthotics affect the ball of my foot.

The problem I have is with the -outside- section of my foot, midway along
the foot. In most cycling shoes, it feels like I'm standing on a rod on the
middle outside of my foot....
Not sure how orthotics can help that...

Yep, gotta agree with you. I've just gone from Time Challenge to Sidi
Genius 4 Megas. I have wide flat feet, and I had a foot orgasm when I tried
these babies on. They are not cheap, but they are more comfortable than my
Asics Kayanos.
