Yes - you can fix it directly beneath (and parallel to) the
top tube, in which case - if you don't have a stop behind
the head tube - you'll need to strap it to the top tube at
the front end. Alternatively, you can fix it between seat
lug and *lower* head lug. This works, but it's perhaps a
bit less secure, and looks horrible! If you ride a very
small frame, these two solutions are one and the same, if
you take my point.

I carry my HPx under the top tube for the same reasons you
have. I use a Zefal plastic pump peg (a jubilee clip type
thing) at the handlebar end, positioned such that the pump
wedges neatly against the seat tube. It's been there for a
few thousand kilometres without a problem.

It's possible and good.

End of pump will nestle in corner of seat tube and top tube,
a peg of some sort will be required for the other end (pump
has hole in end for this). Clip-on pegs are available. I
only recommend using a metal one that can be done-up proper
tight unless plastic peg can be fitted right at end of tube
where it can't slip along (they're not good at resisting the
HPX's strong spring).

An alternative is to use a cable tie wrapped around the head
tube - head acts as a peg. This is good for all but the
largest frames where even a size 4 HPX won't be long enough
to reach the head tube. If frame is not too posh, some epoxy
resin is good for keeping the cable tie in place (but this
is not essential).

Put it this way: When I left hospital after an accident, I
found my pump was still under the top tube even though the
frame was a write-off after being hit by a scooter and
landing on the other side of the road.

So the above is usually good enough, but you could add a home-
made velcro strap if pump was prone to coming loose.

Post top tube length (centre to centre) if not sure what
size pump to get. Best to get longest possible.

Despite the picture on the St. John Street Cycles page, I
can't visualise it in use.

Seems a reasonable place to put the pump. Does it work ?

I am thinking about making my own such device - hell I have
the time. Only my tourer has a chance of enough space
between the seat tube and the rear wheel.

However I ride a Thorn Brevet and my HPX sits under the
nearside seat stay, braced between the pump peg at the top
of the seat stay where the seat tube and chain stay meet and
the inside corner where the seat stay and chainstay), nicely
out of the way of my panniers.

And, though further praise is not needed, I know of no finer
pump than the HPX.

When I was riding across America my pump broke so I bought a
new one in Colorado, it happened to be a Zefal HPX 4, it was
the first I had seen where the spring can be locked out.
What a fine pump it is, I came by it by chance.
