  1. Hi all!

I've been lurking for a while now...time to make my first post!

    I'm a 33 year old male, and I'm fat. ๐Ÿ™‚ As probably is a typical story, I
was a thin guy, in good shape, and then I married at 23 years old. When I
got married, I weighed 170 pounds, when I started dieting this month, I had
    ballooned up to 226.

I've tried a few half-hearted attempts at dieting over the years, but
nothing ever lasted more than a day or two. After doing a lot of reading on
low-carb, I bought 'the book,' and decided to try Atkins starting April 1,
    2005.

Its been a little over 2 weeks, and here are my results so far, and my
    observations.

I've lost 12 pounds, down to 214 at this point.
I've only had a couple of 'cheats,' although one was major, and involved
cookies and Pizza Rolls. ๐Ÿ™‚ It wasn't worth it.
Natural foods (eggs, meat) work best for me. I've tried a few 'atkins type'
foods including Reece's Peanut Butter cups. They tasted OK, but just made
me hungry for my old way of eating.
I've started exercising, jogging and biking.
    I do sleep better.
    Fewer headaches.
I'm still drinking diet soda...and not drinking enough water.
I'm out of the 'carb urge' phase...now I'm rarely hungry at all. My typical
day consists of around 1000 calories at this point. I've read this might be
too low, but I'm just not that hungry.
I've already noticed my huge, tight gut is smaller. My wife has noticed
    this too. ๐Ÿ™‚

anyway...not coherent perhaps, but those are my thoughts so far. I'm
feeling like continuing....and its hard to believe that the 200 pound
barrier is only 14 pounds away!

    226/214/180 - April 1, 2005

  2. Great progress. :-)

  3. You're smart. Eat the pure foods and stay away from the Low carb
versions of all the bad foods like the Reeses peanut Butter Cup things.
They are full of sugar alcohols and have also been known to start
cravings in people. Protein and veggies dot he trick! Get your carbs
from your veggies!!! You'll do great if you stick to it. No more cookie
and pizza rolls as they will make you feel like a failure, add weight,
and feel sluggish with the carb overload.

Men lose weight faster than woman and if you exercise, drink your
water, lay off the pop, and stick to LC you'll be 170 again soon!!!!
There are a lot of success stories in here. Mind you there are some
jerks in here to. Dont feed them by lashing out rather just ignore
them. It's hard to do though! LOL
    Best Wishes!

That's so great Brad! I started on April 4th, and have some of the same
observations as you do...it sounds like you're off to a great start also

  5. Hi Brad

I started Atkins on April 1st also, I have lost 6 lbs. The 1st 2 days
were tough, now everything is going great.

I still miss peanut butter, and milk. When can I start eating those on
Atkins? How about low carb milk?

I cheated and had some PB on celery. Are you using the Ketostixs? When
do you stop?, when you move out of induction? When the strips stop
showing color is that your ACE?

    Good luck.

  6. First...thanks all for the replies...

    CathyLee,

I'm no expert, but here's my thoughts:

After your two week induction period, you could have *SOME* peanut butter.
However, you still have to count the carbs. I think one tablespoon is 5
grams or so...I have tried the low-carb Atkins chocolate milk, and its
    pretty good...2 grams per cup.

I'm not using Ketostix...I personally don't care if I'm in ketosis or not.
I see Atkins as basically a 'low-calorie' diet with built in appetite
control. By sticking to the proteins/veggies, I don't get hungry. I've
actually had trouble getting over 1200 calories a day now...

    Good luck to you too!

  7. A tablespoon of real peanut butter, that is ground peanuts, is only 2 net
    carbs.

Sounds like you've got the hang of it (but probably need to up the
calories). Even a quick off the wagon works out in the long run if the
result is that you concluded FOR YOURSELF that it's not worth it.

You should be out of induction now, so peanut butter (unsweetened)
should be fine in moderate amounts (it IS calorie dense). Hoods Carb
    Countdown might do for milk.

Ketostix are great for giving you a visual confirmation that you are,
indeed, in ketosis, but they aren't necessary. I was peeing on them a
lot at first, but got tired of that and just kept my carbs down. Every
now and then I'll use one to check on it, though.
