  1. No, I don't post often, and I haven't in quite a while, but school is
finally out for the summer (I'm a classroom teacher) and I can start
(again, finally) thinking about doing real cooking on a regular basis.
The last 4-5 weeks of school were so incredibly hectic that I wasn't
typically getting home until close to 10pm. By that time, I'm far too
tired to *eat* dinner, nevermind cook dinner.

However, today was the first Monday of the summer vacation, and I
decided to celebrate in true summer vacation style. Slept sinfully
late, stayed in bed after waking to read a book and watch a West Wing
rerun on television, ate a terribly unhealthy (but delicious)
"breakfast" at noon while chatting on ICQ to someone I haven't been
able to chatter properly with in ages and ages, coached a soccer game,
then went to the market for something to grill since the sun was
shining (not a cloud in the sky) and we're well into the long, long,
    long sunshining days of June.

So, on my brand new, bought-on-wonderful-sale summer dishes I had for
    dinner tonight:

    ~Grilled Ahi tuna
    ~Grilled portabello mushroom
~Fresh green beans sauteed with a piece of bacon in bits and onion
    slivers
~Taboulli (made yesterday afternoon, so the flavors were *perfect* by
    tonight
~Spent grain bread with garlic vinagrette for dipping, and
    ~a Cosmopolitan.

Dessert is a Bernard Castelain chocolate bar (milk chocolate with
hazelnut splits) that I'm nibbling on while watching The Princess Bride
on DVD (for the 900th or so time).

    So, here's to summer!

    Alexis.

    900 times? That's inconceivable!

    Have fun storming the castle!

  3. You keep using that word.

I don't think it means what you think it does.

  4. Grilled tuna is one of my favorites, but I don't find good tuna around
    here very often.

The whole meal sounds good, particularly the taboulli with the tuna.

I'd probably go with a juicy red wine instead of the Cosmopolitan, but
    as you wish.

    It works for me.

Wow, congratulations! You deserve every minute of that leisurely
morning and the wonderful dinner. It soiunds really awesome.

Tonight, we're having grilled salmon, along with grilled asparagus, a
tossed salad with red wine vinaigrette, and a loaf of peasant bread.
For dessert, some Bing cherries, which are one of my favorite foods
    ever.

Darn. Beat me to it, Dean <g>

That's one of my favorite quotes. I find myself using it on a
    semi-regular basis at work.

    Who are you quoting?

It's from the movie, The Princess Bride. In it, Vizzini (a bad guy)
repeatedly protests that Westley (the movie's male lead) could not have
been doing whatever it is that he's doing (he could not have discovered
their crime, he could not be following them, he could not be catching
up to them, he could not be climbing the cliffs, etc, because it's
"inconcievable!" Inigo (one of Vizzini's helpers, played by Mandy
Patinkin) finally looks at him in utter frustration and says, "You
keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Of course, it's all in the delivery.

OB Food -- the salmon was delicious. I wasn't at all sure that the
pineapple marinade would work, but it did. I still think it's better
with more of a white-flesh fish, but this is June, it's Alaska, so
salmon is what I have. I did grill the artichokes. First time I've
ever done that, but it won't be the last. Dessert ended up being an
apple strudel-like thing (made with a sheet of puff pastry and the last
apple in the fruit bowl and some stuff from the pantry). Thrown
together, but not at all disappointing. I didn't have an egg to do an
egg wash over the dough, but it didn't really seem to detract from the
final dish. Next time, though, I'll use more cinnamon and a bit of
    ginger in the filling.

Tomorrow's grill - bacon stuffed cheeseburger.

sounds interesting... would you please walk me through the process?

I'm not a big movie watcher and I don't watch reruns on DVD. Putting
that aside... What does The Princess Bride have to do with this and
why would Dean feel the need to quote a movie when Damsel used the
    word appropriately?

Damsel referenced the "The Princess Bride" herself before using the word
"inconceivable." For nerds who know the movie the automatic response is,
"You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it does."

Damsel used the word correctly and Dean's response was entirely
    appropriate.

Alexis made the reference, Damsel quoted and answered.

Oops, my mistake. Still, it all works. Damsel's use of "inconceivable"
was clearly in reference to the movie. Dean's follow-up is still valid.
And my name is still Inigo Montoya, and you killed my father...

Okay, you've convinced me. It was a joke that I didn't "get".

Yes, it was a joke 🙂 I know most of that movie by rote.

I was overseas when the movie came out and had never heard of it. The
person who convinced me to rent it wouldn't give me a single hint what it
was about. Imagine my disappointment when Fred Savage and Peter Falk first
appeared. I thought I'd been tricked into a watching a kids movie. <g>

If you've not had the opportunity yet, I strong recommend reading the
book (the original of the book, not any "adapted from the screenplay"
book you might see). I envy folks who haven't read it, because they
have the pleasure of reading it for the first time.

OB Food - I did finally remember to stop at the fruit stand today. I
bought two baskets of Ranier cherries, thinking I'd eat a few on the
way home and have the rest for after dinner tonight. Unfortunately, a
few turned into a few more, and those few more tasted like a few
*more*. Soon enough, I looked and realized the cherries were gone.
However, I still have three white peaches to do dessert with. Dinner
tonight: bacon-stuffed cheeseburger (on the grill) with avacado slices
and roasted roma tomatoes, parmesean and roasted garlic potatoes,
steamed broccoli. I'm making another batch of roasted garlic olive oil
right now (the oil for a broccoli dressing and the roast garlic for the
    burgers.

    I love summer.
