Researching carrying firearms while riding. I hear that several people are carrying near known Mountain Lion attack sites.
Anyone here carry?
Anyone have any discharge issues while riding? esp. considering the GLOCK safety system. I've never heard of any accidental discharge issues riding; however, I'm new to the thought.
I'll be moving to the LA area (Rancho Santa Margarita) soon and have just wondered what's going on... esp. since I am both a rider and arms dealer. I never thought about carrying while riding. AZ doen't ahve the mtn lions. Just some coyotes and Javelina. And I'm in Phx, so I see no real reason to carry in the valley. But some people do carry. SO, i'm curious and would like to have a resource of knowledge on the issue.
do you think a mt. lion could catch up to ya? if i had one chasing me i dont think it would have a chance. it seems that a gun wouldnt help much against a mt. lion, because what i hear they suprise attack from above or behind.
Currently I don't carry, personally I think it might solve some of the crime problems on multi-use trails, but what do you do about persperation? Guaranteed to rust most guns! 😕

But that's why we clean them often! If I were to carry, I could do my Glock 23, or I could pick up a Kel-Tec. KelTec would be lighter. Much lighter since it is mostly plastic. A lot of officers carry them at thier ankle or pocket. I've even heard that some normal socks can hold them!
well if you could always get a stainless gun, but it would be expensive. a gun big enough to quickly kill a mt. lion though is gona weigh alot. i dont think a .22 would kill it befor it attacked you. a 9mm might do it, if its a head shot. still though i wouldnt carry a gun while riding. it would get in the way, and i would be worried it would discharge if i fell or something. plus im not sure how legal it is, especially if its loaded. better check with the police about that one.
Mountain lions kill by bites to the skull or neck. If you wear your brain bucket, its possible you will escape the first few bites. If you can get your pistol, it would improve your chances for survival. A .22 to the cat's chest would make a BIG difference. And a .380 from a KelTec P3AT would definitely do the trick.
Always carry in a holster that completely covers the trigger and you should be safe. The striker in a Glock will not travel unless the initial trigger take-up has been pulled. Other firearms are similar.
When a Mtn. lion attacks, it'll probably be a leap from the brush onto your back. You'll never see it coming. He'll knock you off your bike and crush your neck.
If you're so worried about it, find a different place to ride.
Fire arms and Mt. Lions. I have to wonder how fast on the draw you would have to be to shot a running Mt. Lion, while ridding your bike. I have some experience with handguns as an ex sheriff officer. I would have never been fast enough to shot an attacking Mt. Lion. A man with a knife 20 feet away can stab you before you can pull your weapon (it has been proven many times), so you think your hand gun will protect you NO. It is illegal to carry a concealed handgun with out a concealed carry permit, as I understand is hard to get one in California. Also you are responsible for every bullet you fire, if one of your bullets hits a bystander you in deep trouble. When an officer fires his gun he aims to hit critical mass (heart/lungs) to stop the aggressor. The critical mass of a Mt. Lion is very narrow and almost impossible to hit if the Lion is on the run. As far as guns the best would be a 12gauge shotgun. A 22-caliber handgun or Kel Tex .380 I don’t believe would do the trick. A 40SW, 45ACPor 10mm would be a better choice. The Kel Tex is not a very accurate gun; the Lion would have to be on you to hit him (I use to own one).
Even though I own a handgun and have a concealed carry permit I would never carry while riding. If my route were so dangerous I would find another route. Your best self-defense is your own mind.
I never used to carry a weapon to attack the wildlife but after a particularly nasty incident with a mole while riding one afternoon, i always carry a big knife, a big gun and a high intensity ocean flare...just incase..
dont get many lions in the Scottish Highlands but watch out for the old wild Scottish haggis. Especially during the mating season. Bloody vicious.
I would've thought that MTB riders was on the Mt Lion's menu. If I had to kill something for a feed with my mouth & claws I would pick something smaller. BMX riders maybe.....
In Australia, all the stuff out in the bush that can kill you is usally too small to take a pot shot at (snakes/spriders etc)
I'm fond of the Glock model 17 that I carry - accurate, reliable, robust, and most importantly, safe. However, my primary concern is two legged varmints, which can generally be put down with 9mm. For mountain lions, I would opt for a 10mm - model 20, or a .45 ACP - model 21. I've never heard of a Glock having an impact related accidental discharge. They have three safeties that prevent this as long as the trigger is not pulled; be sure to use a holster that fully covers the trigger and you should be fine - Fobus and Glock both offer economical options. Obtain the proper permit, then train thoroughly. As has been said before - it's better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it. Besides, shooting is another great sport to get involved with. On a less serious note, perhaps someone will come up with a biathlon type event for MTBR's - except you don't stop or dismount to shoot.

I live up in Oregon where mountain lions exist, but rarely do I hear about mountain lion attacks. I have not met any mountain bikers that carry a gun or has ever carried a gun. The attacks I've heard of usually involve small children that are left alone to wander out of the campsite. What I have heard about mountain lions is that they are curious animals that like to stalk prey from a distance, but are timid and shy unless provoked. I know some bikers that have come across them on the trail from a distance and it is usually the mountain lion that retreats into the forest. Have youever been attacked by a mountain lion or other woodland animal? If so I would like to know the details of the attack. I've heard the best thing to do in an encounter is to stand your ground and make yourself look as big as possible such as taking your coat off and waving it above your head. You can also make load yelling noises. These two things scare the [censored] out of them. The worst thing you could do is try to hunker down or flat out run away cause this will cause the mountain lion to think of you as prey. As far as a gun goes there is a chance of shooting yourself or someone else when getting mauled. I would take mace or pepper spray over a gun anyday when it comes to getting attacked by an animal, cause of the applied area that comes from a spray compared to the size of a bullit and also the weight savings when riding. To me coming across a mountain lion would be a bonus considering they don't like to attack prey thats larger than them and they dont like people in groups; more the reason to go mountain biking with two or more people. Yeah,to come across one would be awesome not to mention uncommon. Bye the way I would love to hear about some of the stories from the attack sites written in your post. How many mountain lion attacks have there been and have they been recent? Did the people getting attacked at this spot die or live? How long was the attack and at what time were they? Did the attack start from far away or was the victim pounced on unaware of the mountain lions prescene?
