  1. Well, I havent' really written much this year. I had so much success last
year with Atkins as a diet (280 down to 244 or so) and of course, like all
diets, it failed because i didn't really incorporate it into my life. I'm
taking a few weeks off from exercise while the docs figure out some issues
regarding numbness in one of my feet and lower legs (not diabetes, not
bulging spinal disc..waiting for new test on Monday). If they dont' figure
it out soon, i'm going to let them know that i'm getting back in the gym.
The layoff is really killing me.

Anyhow, I'm down to 268 from a Memorial day high of 287. Most of the weight
was lost in june with a lot of off-plan eating in July preventing any
further progress. I'm going to revise my goal to 265 for this month and try
to hit monthly 5-lb. goals for the rest of the year. The #1 difference this
time is I'm cooking. I'm actually learning to cook again instead of
constantly eating eggs, protein shakes, chicken breasts, etc. The other big
difference is I'm staying away from low-carb convenience foods and all nuts.
No Advantage bars, no Morning Start...none of it. That stuff doesn't work
for me b/c eventually I will stray off and eat the real thing. As for nuts,
i can't eat normal portions. I have consumed an entire can of Mauna Loa
Macadamias and Almonds at one sitting. A couple of glasses of red wine
after dinner followed by a square of Lindt 85% is the only thing I indulge
in now and it doesn't appear to be stalling me but I will drop them if I
have a week with no weight loss. I guess I should also add that I have
carbs during and after my workouts mixed in a protein shake (3 times per
week normally, none at the moment) and they don't seem to affect my cravings
or hunger so I'm not giving them up as I feel they have benefit when
    consumed during/after heavy lifting.

I am curious, why did you go off plan in July.

    i

Because suddenly I missed being fat. 😉

Seriously, just insert the litany of excuses that most people provide and
pick one. Stress, too busy, etc. I wasn't totally off-plan. Just had a
few bad weekends and some business lunches that could have been managed a
lot better. I seem to stall quite easily if I "cheat" especially without my
workouts. Anyhow, I'm back on the horse and I have that "feeling" that I
had last year when I knew I would stay the course. My problem occurs when I
get under 250. I have a large frame and at 250, I can wear all of my old
clothes and start feeling more confident, etc. Complacency kicks in and
WHAM (well..really, the WHAM took over 6 months last time from OCtober to
April) I'm back over 280, eating [censored], and skipping workouts.

The health issues have scared me a bit. I know they are penny ante compared
to many stories I read on here but it's the first time I've been to the
doctor for something where it wasn't apparent what the problem was. It's
very frustrating. I think about people who aren't able to exercise easily
and how it's always been easy for me (physically). Anyhow, I'm really
sticking to it. I don't know if the extra weight on my frame caused my foot
to go numb but I'm sure it didn't help. I feel that I have an opportunity
to build the foundation for the rest of my life physically and i'm not going
to blow it this time. (insert snarky JC comment here, please)

Welcome back to the fold, o' wayward child!

There's nothing quite like health problems to keep one on the straight and narrow
(with an occasional stumble into a ditch). For me, having the health problems to
begin with wasn't necessarily the biggest motivation to START low-carbing, but
seeing them improve or even disappear is a MAJOR motivation for me to KEEP on
    keeping on.

  4. 5lbs a month on atkins??? That is really low, you could easily be trippling
    that figure.

Not necessarily. I'm seeing a pattern here. You're new to the group (3 posts so
far, only 2 of which have shown up in Google), yet twice you've proclaimed to
people that they could lose WAY more in some idealized timetable in your
imagination. People lose at different rates due to a myriad of factors. If you
can't comprehend that, you are 1) most likely going to HUGELY disappointed when
your own weight loss rate slows down (which it WILL after the first couple of
weeks), or b) you are deliberately not comprehending it and are, thus, a troll
trying to get a rise out of people.

    Snip

But Saffire, he's been low carbing for a whole *week* almost! Surely
    he's an expert? <suppressed giggles>

    Take care,

Where on earth are you getting your information?

Weight loss of 1 to 2 lbs a week is a good rate (And NORMAL after the first
few weeks). To lose 5 lbs in a month certainly within that range.

    [canned response]
After the water weight loss, it's extremely difficult to lose more
than one percent of your total weight in actual fat per week, unless
you exercise several hours a day.

Weight loss programs which promise losses of several pounds a week are
typically so low in calories and/or protein that you lose substantial
muscle mass along with fat -- this looks nice when you step on a
scale, but lowers your daily caloric burn significantly, and makes
weight loss harder to maintain. Your total muscle mass determines
how many calories you burn, especially at rest.
