Finally bought a new SUV

The Page and Plant records are great...they do a version of "ThankYou" that
will give you goosebumps. Mind you..it aint Zep and they never intended it
to be..but..good stuff. ....Now...Coverdale and Page....please..big mistake.

truck and forces you to park in a big space a mile away from where you want
to be, when you can get a decent sports-car knockoff, which has about twice
the acceleration, much better handling, and will fit in a small parking
space nearer where you want to be, for less money?

How often will you use the SUV to go over difficult terrain or to carry a
lot of stuff?

The Suburban is too small to carry a lot of stuff! That's why you need a
trailer and a box truck as well. And then you need something to get the
stuff off the truck or trailer when you get it home. That's why I need to
get a gantry crane and a forklift.

He is not arguing that you don't buy an "expensive" car, indeed he suggests
a "decent sports-car knock-off" would be a lot more fun. We just think 4WD
is a stupid choice unless you need to go off-road.

OK, the guy in the SUV has the bigger car. But the guy in the sports car has
a car that's a whole lot nicer to drive, out accelerates an SUV by a mile -
and you have to accept that having more acceleration is generally good - and
lets you park in smaller spaces, so closer to where you want to be. The
sports car is also less likely to end up in a crash (except with... er...
guys my age driving it) and protects you better if there is a crash (check
the stats).

Anyway, IMO an SUV looks like what it is, which is a truck chassis with body
and seats bolted on top as an afterthought to get round the fuel economy
laws, design elegance nil. A sports car looks like what it is, which is a
nice aerodynamic piece of quality engineering, design elegance high.

It's just a cultural difference thing. You guys like to drive little
TR-whatevers while wearing tweed driving caps down to the pub for a game of
darts and a warm pint. We like to sit up big and high, wearing cowboy hats
and headin' down to watch football (the real kind) on the enormo-vision TV

There are different cars for different ages and for various purposes.
I've enjoyed some very nice cars over the years, including notably: an
E-Type Roadster, a Daimler V-12 and my current Range Rover, to name
but a very few.

I have enjoyed all the cars I've owned but for my current lifestyle,
the vehicle I am currently driving couldn't be bettered.

However, I agree with you that mums doing the 'school run' in a
sodding great 4 x 4, is a complete and utter pose and a waste of a
good vehicle!!

While there is some truth to what you say, when considering the old-style
truck-based SUVs. They were/are great for off-road, great for severe
weather, but suck for most other reasons.

However, welcome to the world of car-based SUVs. My Honda Pilot seats 8, or
5 and a load of cargo, has an extremely responsive 3.5L, 255 hp, V6, handles
like a Honda car on the road, and handles severe weather, and mild off-road
(which is all I need), just great.

Fun is in the eye of the beholder.
