The final OLN TdF TV ratings are in, and it was a big success for the network. The network had an average morning rating of 0.5, up from last year's 0.26 (and it did slightly better in the evening re- showings). The two morning ratings figures correspond to 260,000 and 109,000 homes, respectively.
The highlight, perhaps unsurprisingly, was last Saturday's time-trial. The climactic trial gained OLN a 1.5 share, or 860,000 homes, the highest viewership in the network's history.

We can all rant and rave about this or that on-air personality and how OLN did this or that but the bottom line is the ratings were probably good enough to warrant more cycling coverage and we should all be happy with that.

That's a good point. I felt the same way Saturday: while the outcome was interesting, I find watching ITTs boring. Too bad that it was probably many people's introduction to the TdF, given the hype accorded that "climactic" stage.

I guess unsurprising because that stage was evidently going to decide the winner, but in general I don't find ITTs interesting events to watch. Sure there is drama in the situation and enjoyable tension about what the outcome might be, as with any cycling race, but there's just not enough GOING ON to make it an otherwise watchable spectacle. At least TTTs have something more to look at - you can see how well a team appears to be working together, how long each rider's turn is, etc.
I guess that leads to a question - what could they change about the ITT coverage (N.B. not the event itself) to make it a more interesting spectacle?

I'm with you Andrew - let's campaign for more cycling on Oz TV. At least SBS covers some of the Aussie tours. Track racing is made for TV and we have some of the best in the world. Some of the sprinters would make the WWF look like a bunch of ****ies - real sports entertainment!:p

Thanks for the support, but PLEASE don't ever mention cycling (of any kind) and WWF in the same sentence again... :-) Although after learning of the "fixed" post-TdF crits, there's less of a difference than I thought there was...
