Figuring Mile Split Times

  1. I'd like to know the equation used to figure out mile times.
    Say I run 6.1 miles and it takes me 54 mins and 22 sec.
    How would I figure the exact mile average times?

    You divide the total time by the total distance.
    You'll need to convert the time into seconds
    to make life easier.

    So, for the specific example above,
    Time = 54min 22sec = (54*60)sec + 22 sec = 3240 + 22 = 3262 sec
    Distance = 6.1miles

    Divide 3262 sec by 6.1 miles to get 534.754 seconds per mile.

    534.75 seconds = 8 min and 54.75 seconds per mile is your mile avg.

    You can also do a search on the internet to find calculators
    that will do this for you. You just put in the "6.1" and "54:22"
    and it will tell you the average.

    54.37 . Then divide 54.33 by 6.1 to give you the average. This is 8.91.
    You would then need to convert the decimal place back to seconds by
    multiplying by 60. So let's say the above is 8:55 (.91*60).

    To me it is less complicated this way since I can do a lot of the divisions
    by 60 in my head fairly quickly. Even when running, you can at least ball
    park it by memorizing 10 sec = .16666..., 20 sec = .33333 min; 30 sec = .5
    min; 40 sec = .666666... min; 50 sec = .833333... min.

    I would suggest setting up an Excel sheet with the formulae in it so that
    all you need to do is punch in the time and then the distance and divide.
    You can even use one of the custom number functions so you do not need to
    convert the time just enter it as 54:33. The answer will be given in the
    proper format.

    Here's how. 54:22 is 3262 seconds. Divide that by
    6.1 is 535 seconds per mile. This is 8.92 minutes per mile,
    which is 8 minutes 55 seconds per mile.

    Here's how. 54:22 is 3262 seconds. Divide that by
    6.1 is 535 seconds per mile. This is 8.92 minutes per mile,
    which is 8 minutes 55 seconds per mile.

    For figuring these things in your head, I find it easier to work
    more with minutes than seconds also. But I seem to work even more
    differently than this. For starters, I don't mind approximate
    answers.

    *If it were exactly 9 minutes per mile, the time would be 54.9 minutes.
    The minutes are right, but we have 32 extra seconds.
    *32 seconds divided by 6.1 miles is 5 seconds per mile with 1.5 seconds
    left over, so we're at 9:00 - :05, or 8:55 per mile.
    *1.5 seconds divided by 6.1 miles is negligible. We're done.
    If you didn't consider it negligible, then 1.5 divided by 6.1 is
    almost exactly .25, so 8:55 - .25, or 8:54.75 minutes/mile.

    You do have to track whether to add the increment or subtract it.
    But I find it easier to do successive approximations in my head while
    running than to carry exact division tables.

    When running I have no problems with "ballparking it" either. And as
    one runs more especially the same distance, you begin to learn and remember
    what those paces come out to be. If you know a few major ones around the
    times you normally run then you can get even closer. For instance running 6
    min/mile pace for a 10K gives one a total time of 37:12, 7 min/mile is 43:32
    (or close) so you can begin to narrow it down. One really does not need to
    know that many of these since we typically run races in a fairly narrow band
    of times (at least shorter races).

    Exactly. For example, suppose you did your 1.14 mile interval in 6:15. What's
    your pace ?

    Well, 6 minutes per mile is 6 minutes plus an extra 54 seconds - about 3
    seconds which is about 51. Likewise, you get about 45 seconds for 5:30 pace. So
    subtract some number between 45 and 51 and there's your pace. So the 6:15
    interval is about a 5:30 pace.

    Doing fast mental arithmetic is about remembering a few numbers and knowing
    some convenient tricks, you don't need to be a math genius.

    In addition to the other suggestions, you could use something like the GNU
    units program:

    $ gunits -v
    2083 units, 71 prefixes, 32 nonlinear units

    You have: (54 min + 22 sec)/6.1 miles
    You want: minutes/mile
    (54 min + 22 sec)/6.1 miles = 8.9125683 minutes/mile
    (54 min + 22 sec)/6.1 miles = (1 / 0.1122011) minutes/mile
    You have: .9125683 minutes
    You want: sec
    .9125683 minutes = 54.754098 sec
    .9125683 minutes = (1 / 0.018263473) sec

    yielding an answer of 8:55 per mile (rounded off).
