  1. Hello all,

I hope a few of you are able to help me.

I've recently joined Field & Trek and am working on their website, and
seeing as the site has been mentioned on this group a few times, I'd
like to ask for your opinions on it, and if there are any improvements
that you think that can be made to the site.

If you want to reply to this topic, or drop me an e-mail (sorry about
the personal e-mail address in the from field), with any suggestions or
grumbles that you have I promise that I will take them in and try and
improve the sites around your needs.

    Thanks
    James

The site looks ok. I'd ditch IIS and ASP.net though, but some people seem to
    like it.
Hmm, using Attenda eh? Somebody has too much profit margin!

One major improvement would be to not spam newsgroups. If we all asked
similar (commerical) questions, usenet would be flooded with spam... oh,
    wait.

  3. LOL - Thanks for your comments Treefrog - I'm really, really, really
not trying to spam the newsgroup, and I can't apologise enough if
    that's what I'm doing!

Most people on here would have heard of Field and Trek, so there would
be nothing to gain from trying to promote us on this forum, it would do
quite the opposite in fact if I tried to spam people with offers on
here, which I'm not about to do (although did you know that we are
offering a.......!). It's more of a case of trying to find out from
people that are actually interested in our items/shop if there is
anything that I can do to make the experience better or if there is
anything seriously wrong with the website/company that I may not know
    about!

Again, I apologise if my post can be classified as spam, and I really
hope someone will delete it if that's the case, but my objectives are
    not to cause any upset!

I wouldn't classify it as spam .. if anyone if offended they can easily
    kill the thread.

I don't have a problem with the website - I do have a problem with the
marketing model, where the prices are basically too high, but then there
are intermittent offers, vouchers, discounts, specials, or whatever (but
the offer items are never there in my sizes!). I'd much rather have nice
simple lower prices. And less paper catalogues hitting my doormat .. now
that =is= getting on for spam.

Contact recommends the use of Firefox; SC recommends it at gunpoint.

  5. searches are a bit hit and miss. for instance if I enter waterproof trouser
or walking pole I don't get particularly useful or relevant results. You
still have to ferret around a dozen pages or so to find all of the products.
These are just examples but it happens with most things.

just something about the site that bugs me!

I agree with the paper catalogue comments.... and if you're looking for
ideas, how about when I update my address on the website it filters through
to the people who send the paper catalogues - if you will insist on sending
them, at least send them to my current address!

That hardly seems fair, given that this NG is likely to be one
wherein the website in question will come in for its fair
share of criticism. At least James is willing to listen to
    his audience...

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to comment.

Overall, I find the site OK to use. Problems with the search facility
have been mentioned, but I can generally get to what I want.

The main issue which puts me off F&T is the stock levels. If you want to
offer an online ordering system, it needs to linked to your stock
system. This way, I know that I'll get what I wanted, when I wanted.
That way, I can decide whether or not I want to order it from F&T, from
somewhere else, or even shop for it on foot.

For instance, last winter I ordered 4 items. None were in stock, but I
only found this out 3 days later by email. Some of the items were not
going to be in stock for serveral weeks, and some they wouldn't give a
date for! When I complained about this, I got a very curt response from
the F&T management telling me how it wasn't their fault (it's all to do
with the suppliers you know) and bascailly letting me know how lucky I
    was that F&T even existed.

I don't use the site much, but I'll have a look and report back.

yes, as a one-off I'd agree, but there's the danger of every man and his dog
asking the same thing. Spam is everywhere, I can't stand it, it plagues my
life. I'm just looking out for things I value, nip it in the bid so to
    speak.

So, no hard feelings Field and Trek.... apart from that time when you
tricked me into your "loyalty" card. I only spotted it had cost me £5 once I
got home... I've never been back in your shop in Ambleside since then.
Anyway, I'm drifting totally off topic here.

It fails the 7 second load time test. It's nicely organised. The
    summary/tech info. tab is nice.

The problems I have with F&T are not down to the website.

That'll be the ASP and IIS combination. ;o)
