Much more trouble than it's worth. If you're on a budget and handy
check out the $500 Motobecane Fantom CX at bikesdirect.com. Linear
pull brakes, which work just fine, takes standard racks and fender.
They also have an OK touring bike, the Windsor Touring for $600, also
takes standard racks and fenders.

I speak from experience--you can certainly put racks and fenders on a
disc bike--but you're going to have to spend much more to get a good
strong rack--the cheap disc ones are terrible, and if you want real
full coverage fenders, you'll also spend way way more, or have to bend
your own custom struts.

Also, if he's using this for utility, disc brakes attract thieves.
When I had a Brodie Energy last year, set up with an awful Axiom rack--
even it attracted attention and admiring glances, while my current
hybrid with fenders and racks flies under the radar--while still being
handsome. It's definitely a real problem to think about. I sold my
Brodie, as the rack/brake issues weren't worth the hassle.

into Canada without huge brokerage fees from UPS; USPS apparently
won't carry a bike box.

Be prepared to pay a duty. When I bought my Brodie from Canada I got
hit for $50. Those are just suggestions anyway, surely you can order
something from a bike shop. Bianchi Volpe, Redline Conquest, Jamis--
plenty of tough cxcross/tour bikes if you look in the right places.

Not for $500. Nothing much under a thousand here. Even the Kona jake
is $950. (Hmm, so why is it $700 in the US when our buck is so
strong?)

I know I know, it's cheap for the shop service, but it's the
castration that worries me when my wife finds out she doesn't get a
new couch.

Hi there.

Recently Fed Ex charged me $50+ Canadian to bring a used bicycle sold
by a private citizen to me from the US. I do not know if that is
cheaper than UPS.
