Feeling sorry for myself

Antibiotics do not and never have worked against viruses.

It happens thousands of times a day
Patient arrives at doctors feeling terrible with a mild virus, and demands
treatment.
Doctor knows there is nothing he/she can do so he/she should tell patient
to go to bed for a few days.
Patient would be unhappy with this news, and may play hell, so doctor
prescribes antibiotics, which do no good to the patient, and some little
harm.
Such overuse of antibiotics causes antibiotic resistant bugs like MRSA.
Which harms the rest of the population.
Shame really but there is nothing any individual can do about it.
Changing society so that people do not expect a prescription when visiting
the doctor would be a massive job :-(

My lady friend and I both had persistent irritating chesty coughs for
several weeks, so we went to our respective docs. Mine sounded my
chest, said he didn't detect the wheeze I had complained about, but gave
me Amoxycillin for about 7 days and said come back if it doesn't clear
up and I will give you an inhaler spray.

Her doc said it was a virus infection and gave her the anti-inflammation
inhaler spray to use for ten days.

Mine appeared to clear up before hers, but we are both still getting the
occasional coughing bout.

I reckon that the air we breathe is the root cause, and it is an
asthmatic thang....

I have lost about 5lbs, but that is due to the weather and eating less.

Which is why GPs will only prescribe antibiotics as a last resort
these days, and certainly not in the way that you describe. 5 or 10
years ago maybe but not now.
