WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it would hold a hearing to consider a consumer group's petition that the agency tighten regulations and labeling for salt in food. The November 29 meeting will consider a request from the Center for Science in the Public Interest to limit salt in processed food and to require additional health information on food labels about salt and sodium content of foods, among other changes.
In 2005, the group petitioned the FDA to reclassify salt as a food additive, rather than its longtime designation as a food "generally recognized as safe."
It has cited the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from high blood pressure. Cutting salt intake can reduce changes of developing and curtail the condition, according to the American Heart Association.
One in three Americans suffer from high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ugh. The nanny state. It's should be an individual's judgement on how much salt he/she wants to consume. The amount of sodium in food is already printed on a foods label.
-
It appears that many people do not use good judgment when it comes to there salt intake.

Where?

Salt intake has only a small affect on blood presure, and that only for the small number of people [about 10%, IIRC] who are salt sensitive. Most doctors don't even bring it up when talking to hypertensive patients these days-- it is a literal non-issue.
There are so many worse dietary crimes being perpatrated on and by the population at large, it makes no sense for the government to focus on salt.

I am glad that the U. S. Government has finally zeroed in on the area in its diet in which population is not using good judgment. I hope that California will now require food containing salt to have a label that reads "This product contains a substance that is known to the State of California to be hazardous to your health."

Does this mean the major burger chains will reduce or eliminate salt in their fries? They keep making them "healthier" or more vegaterian friendly and every change makes them taste worse.

Nuking food with salt kills your sense of taste, not the other way around. That's why food that otherwise tastes like [censored] has to include it. 😄
