Thank you. This is high praise indeed. It is intended for the wife
of the priest who married us. She is ill, with heart trouble that the
doctors cannot figure out, and I wanted to give her something that could
hug her and wrap her in my prayers.

Thank you! I have been trying to get our weekly rag to let me write
a food column for some time. They don't have the money for it. They
do, however, have the money for a chit of a thing who hasn't any writing
talent, and didn't even know what she was writing about (she wrote a
plea to the readers to direct her subject in her first column) to have a
column about nothing. Not that I'm upset or anything. 😉

Do a couple of "free" columns for them and they'll understand your
worth in no time. I'm having lunch with my niece who worked for her
local rag a number of years - I'll ask her what a good way of breaking
into newspaper writing would be. The answer will probably being a
regular reporter who puts your special spin on the news and you have
the talent to do it.

I know they are willing to print me for free. My hesitation is that I
am concerned that as long as I am willing to do it for free, there will
never be a change in status. However, if I give them a few weeks' worth
and then wait and see, they may call on me after all.

If you negotiate with them, you might come to an agreement that "x"
number of columns will be free - to build an audience. Be sure to
build in a section where the readers can respond to your column... a
poll, likes/dislikes, whatever. If they respond directly to the
newspaper, then the newspaper honchos can see how much you're
interesting readers. Since it's a weekly paper, there won't be much
increase in readership - but if you garner interest, the management
should take notice.
