Favorite Bike Shops

I also really liked Spoke & Sprocket in University Place, Wa when we
were out there. Had a good selection, and seemed to be good people.

I do not have any favored bicycle shops. There are
several I go. Those that particularly cater to racers
are more than a bit snotty. All of them are ready to
sell anything to anybody anytime. My own ability with
bicycles has saved me a metric butt-load of money.
Bicycle shops are flake magnets. If you can get a
commitment and a job done on time at your lbs you
should treasure them.

Contrarily my automobile mechanic is a man of
impeccable probity. He never misses a delivery or an
estimate. His work is flawless. Motor City Automotive.

Thank goodness for the Mail Order shops for the dedicated Bikies and
the Canadian Tire, Halfords, Carrefours etc operations for the Bread
and Butter Bikies

Having said that though, and having done perhaps more travelling than
most, there is a shop in a small town reasonably close to Paris which
always stands out in my memory as first rate. L'Espace Bellouis in a
picturesque but otherwise unremarkable town by the name of Gif sur
Yvette.

In the days when I used to ride Le Chevreuil, later becoming the
Jacques Anquetil, I never had anything but sterling service from thaqt
shop

Luckily I have both here. Joe is great as are the car guys at ESP,
which are actaully the original owners initials. He was already an old
guy 30 years ago when he was totally disgusted with the other
mechanics out there. So he hired a couple of kids straight out of the
local Voc. school to apprentice with him and expand the shop
eventually. He passed on about 15 years ago. The kids now own the shop
and have relocated by about a half mile, and have hired some more kids
from the voc. school. Same busuiness pretty much for the last 60 or 70
years. We just lost the last local car dealer after 93 years.
Local bike shops are great, especially when your travelling. Great
place to pick up anything you forgot, or broke. Find out about local
riding conditions, rides, resteraunts, places to see, etc...
I can save a few bucks by ordering over the net, but the value,
comfort, and expertise from a good local shop provide more than the
few bucks for me in almost every case, but I'm a cranky tradesman
myself. That said I'm a sucker for closeouts, seconds, and quality
stuff cheap which are out there on the net occasionally.

I did in fact forget that I had dealt with Vecchios

And I did in fact only buy a pair of highgrade shoes there on sale, but
was much more than a little impressed by Peter's "If they don't
fit, send them back - If they do fit pay for them."

Yes, it's a good shop, I used to live close to there, and ended up
having work done
on my bike there, e.g., upgrading to 9-speed.

Can't think of a good one, I can think of the worst one, Performance Bike
Shop. I use to go there just to watch the fist fights between the customers
and the hired help. The fight usually starts with a shouting customer, "YOU
TOLD ME WHEN YOU SOLD ME THIS BIKE.....fill in the blanks." People have
returned to the other bike shops, when the word got around that they don't
keep their promises.

Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. An alladin's cave of wonderful stuff, excellent
own-brand kit, and politically right-on as well. And, of course, the
revolution is now spreading across the land. What more can one ask?

Peter has rebuilt campy levers for me a number of times ... plus
answered numerous "can I do this with Campy <whatever>?" questions.
He knows what works regardless of what the official line might be.

A month or so ago I was being fit for a TT bike at a shop in Ann Arbor
and the guy was going on and on about this way cool shop that he had
just been to in Colorado ...
