  1. Diet groups seem pretty dead. This could be evidence for the theory that
humans fatten up just before the Winter season. The next logical phase of
such a genetic influence on weight control might be to shift to using the
body fat for sustenance during the heart of Winter. This may be what
happens when huge numbers of people start dieting in January.

How many here are already thinking about what they are going to eat at the
    Thanksgiving feast?"

  2. fall and winter are the best time to lose weight for me....exercise is
easier since it is not so hot. i'm getting ready for a big push and am
thinking about how to avoid the feedfests.

Why turkey of course! Honestly, I intend to have a little of the things I only
eat once a year, like stuffing and mashed potatoes. I'll skip the bread and the
desserts (since no one makes home made pumpkin pie, the only kind worth
"cheating" for). I seem to prefer food to sweets nowadays anyway.

Well, being Canadian and given that Thanksgiving is this coming
Sunday/Monday, we've kinda sorta given some thought to it :-)

We're doing family homemade pizza and I'm going to have salad and protein of
my choosing in lieu of pizza.

Our thankfulness is going to be in our hearts.

  5. I haven't started to think about Thanksgiving yet. But I have started to
think about my 40th birthday on the 26th of this month. I've decided that I
want a tiny piece of birthday cake (dark chocolate w/ buttercream frosting).
I've not cheated once during the year I've been lc, so I figure that the
worst it'll do is to cause some water weight gain and some cravings, but I
plan to go low on carbs and calories a day or so beforehand.

**I KNOW, cake is what made me fat in the first place (actually, it's not
since I've never been a big cake/pie/pastry/cookie eater), so I'll take all
the flack and insults. However, I doubt that a tiny piece of cake (say,

as with me, SUmmer is a time for fun and frolic and Winter is the time for
getting into shape. I have more free time during the winter than I do during
    the summer also.

Not me. I mean, we'll have a turkey and all (the kids would revolt if we
didn't) but it's not anything I'm anticipating eagerly. Last year's
Thanksgiving was our 'turning point' so to speak. After gorging ourselves on
horrific amounts of [censored], and then grazing on the leftovers for a few days, we
both realized we felt as bad as we looked. And then we took the scale down out
of the closet and weighed ourselves. That was a moment of horror we won't soon
forget. A real eye-opener. The scale will never go back in the closet, and
Thanksgiving will never be an excuse to pig out again.

Turkey breast (the dark meat gets cooked and shredded for soup and/or
    barbecue sauce)

A very small batch of James Beard's dressing. Crash NEEDS his
dressing/stuffing, and I'd like a little for myself, too. I've become
intolerant of wheat, so we're talking maybe 2 forkfuls.

Mashed potatoes (again for Crash). My body does NOT like them! Not one
    little bit!

Green beans with lemon and hazelnuts

    Olives and dill pickles

Sugar free cranberry gelatin with grated orange zest and possibly some
    cinnamon or something.

  9. Lord, no! Our family always has a pot luck type of get together and
organizing us is like trying to herd cats. We are usually emailing
furiously the last few days before a holiday getting it together. Some of
us are having a get together tomorrow, however, at daughter #2's house to
celebrate birthdays, her #1 son, my oldest grandchild turns 27 Sunday. I
made a big batch of Cajun heroin wings this afternoon to take.

  10. If that one piece of cake re-starts carb cravings, it could be a high price
    for a tradition.

It should be possible to indulge with something you enjoy, that is not
carby. It is possible to make a bowl of low carb frosting.

I skipped birthday cake on my birthday this year.

  13. I understand what you're saying, that one little piece of cake might start
the cravings again. But as someone said to me here before, I will know what
to expect and how to handle the consequences. And I'm not looking at it
like a reward, but rather a rehearsal for my life once I reach my goal.
That's not to say that I will ever go back to the way I used to eat. I'm
very aware of what I eat, moreso than ever in my life.

That said, a rare, once-a-year treat like that won't cause me to balloon
back up overnight, though it might cause me to have to go back to Induction
    for a few days.

Knowing others' experiences that have been posted here, it will probably be
much too 'sweet' for my tastebuds to bear.

Thanks for the advice, Cubit. I have a couple more weeks to decide if I
    really do it or not.

  14. Cubit,

I've been reading this newsgroup since 1998 and this is the slowest it has
    ever been.

I attribute it to the passing of low carb dieting as a fad, which,
unfortunately, seems to have lowered the number of people who are newly
discovering it, trying it, getting excited, and posting here.

I think the explosion of low carb products also has led to the drop in
traffic. People came here to find out how to eat when most of what they used
to eat was off limits. Now people can delude themselves that they are low
carbing while eating crunchy cereal, candy bars, cake, pasta, bread, and ice
cream, so there is no motivation to do any research.

Then, of course, after a few weeks of "low carbing" on these expensive,
bogus, foods, they don't lose any weight, so we stop getting the people
coming by to brag about their weight loss.

I doubt we will ever see the kind of traffic that was routine here in 2000,
    say.

I think the explosion of low carb products also has led to the drop in

Well, we've had this conversation before. LC seems to have gone practically
mainstream. Women's magazines have multi-page articles with low-carb
recipes. And there are dozens, if not hundreds, of message boards where
people can post and get support with various low carb diets. As opposed to
several years ago when there were very few, and many of them part of an ISP
package, such as AOL and Compuserve. Newsgroups are also not as popular as
they once were, and as difficult as it is for folks new to them to figure
out how to find a reader, find a reliable newsfeed, configure their reader,
learn to download messages and post... I'm amazed anyone new ever shows up
here! Much easier to just click onto lowcarb friends or whatever, I'm sure.
And as usual I'll disagree that low carb products have anything much to do
    with traffic here.

I think a somewhat more supportive atmosphere would probably keep people
from drifting away, we just currently have several people who like to pose
as being "tough", a favorite characteristic to assume in many ngs I've
found. IMO they mostly come off as a********s, but they can be offputting
    for new posters, I'm sure.

However, I think that the general level of intelligence on this ng, and
probably ng's in general, is quite a few notches higher than on internet
message boards. Kind of a generalization, and not true in every case I'm
sure, but I think there's definitely a higher signal-to-noise ratio here
than most other venues. It does seem to be dropping though. And the "tough"
posters I refer to invariably lower that ratio. One here seems to be
emulating a certain guy on mfw... but without the actual information that
makes Lyle's posts worth reading. Ah, well.

Not everyone has the same experiences. I like everything I used to like
before going LC. There is not a single food that I would not enjoy eating
now. And it has been that way for the entire time. The real difference is
that I don't crave them now and that I don't eat that stuff all the time
    like I used to.

Atkins since 1/1/02 (yeah, it was a New Year's Resolution)
Besetting sins: good beer, German bread, and Krispy Kremes

  18. They are called heroin wings because they are addictive. However, I thought
the original recipe was rather bland so jazzed it up.

    Original recipe:
    Heroin Wings

    4 lbs chicken wings
    1/2 cup butter
    1 cup grated parmesan cheese
    2 tbsp dried parsley
    1 tbsp dried oregano
    2 tsp paprika
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp freshly-ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350º. Cut wings up into "drummettes". Combine the grated
cheese and the seasonings. Line a shallow baking pan with foil. (Do not omit
this step, or you'll still be scrubbing the pan come New Year's Day!) Melt
the butter in a shallow bowl or pan.
Dip each "drummette" in butter, roll in the seasoned cheese, and arrange in
the foil lined pan. Bake for 1 hour at 350º.

My version, just the parmesan plus some Cajun seasoning. A little less
work and much tastier. I also cook them at about 450 for about 40 minutes,
    they
seem to get browner. They were a big hit Saturday night.

    The real difference is
that I don't crave them now and that I don't eat that stuff all the time
    like I used to.

I'm not craving high carb foods any longer myself.

I've used this woe to re-learn how to eat. That's why I'm thinking that I
should start learning how to deal with food once I reach my goal. Frankly,
even though I'm too far gone to quit now, I have been getting bored with my
food choices (I'm kind of restricted financially right now, so I'm trying to
be frugal as well.) And although I've never felt better than now, I know
that someday in the future I may want an occasional meal including pasta,
rice, or potatoes, or an after-dinner dessert. I'm just trying to think
    realistically.

I'm beginning to get the idea that maintenance is going to involve me making
good conscious food choices and keeping active.

How many here are already thinking about what they are going to eat at the
    Thanksgiving feast?"

short days combined with colder weather and holiday goodies will
fatten anyone up. head to the gym when the weather gets too nasty to
    be outside.
