  1. get ready for fast trials!

    Phelps...49.2 100 free Coughlin...54.7 100 free, 1:59.99
    200 free, 1:00.6 100 back Brenden Hansen....100 breast
    1:01.8 Tara Kirk....1:08.2, 2:28. breaststrokes Aaron
    Peirsol....1:56.+ 200 Back, 54.9 100 Back the most
    impressive to me.......Katie Hoff....4:39 400 IM...I
think that's the fastest time since Allison Wagner in 96
    by an American

reigning Olympic champs Megan Quann and Misty Hyman aren't
looking like they'll make the US team

The LA Times carried an article on Phelps. It's always
interesting to see a writer groping for an angle when it's a
topic that you know a lot more about than them.

Anyways, I guess Phelps' decision to not announce his
Olympic plans has a few people riled.

He keeps hammering the 100m free. Why? I assume he won't be
trying to qualify in that. He knows his "sweet" spot is
middle distance. So he's been working on speed a great deal
to try and see if he can take on Sir Ian in the 400. And he
swam both backstroke events. Is he trying to see how he does
versus Perisol? Maybe not swim those events at trials if he
figures he can't win Gold? Who knows. but he and his coach
seem to want to expand his repotoire. No more 200 fly at
these meets. Must figure he has that nailed and he'll pull
that out of his bag of tricks in Long Beach.

Like it's any business of theirs?

I think it's great to see this kind of thing. Probably keeps
things more interesting for him, too. I just hope he doesn't
spread himself so thin that he compromises one of his bread
    and butter events.

not saying what he'll enter is the best part. I assume he's
doing the 100 free, in hopes to be on the 400 F.R. I would
think he'll enter the 200 back, not 100. Still with 100-200
fly, and both IMs, that makes 5 events. Is he better to make
as many events to win as many medals, or to try to win as
many golds? Some might consider winning 5 golds, better than
5 gold, a silver, and bronze.

    THe AMericans , I think will win the 400 F.R. (they'll be
motivated to get it back after Sydney), but do they have a
    prayer in the 800 F.R.?

    if Phelps can win 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 fly (I don't
think he'll let Crocker beat him again), and 200
Back........plus 2 of the three relays, that is 7 golds.

That would be the first since Spitz I guess. I remember in
'72 when the moronic Keith Jackson said of Spitz, just prior
to the games: "Seven gold medals? No, possibly two..." I'd
like to see Phelps pull it off.

  6. Phelps is doing a good job of keeping people guessing. I
read somewhere that he plans to enter six events at trials.
I think these will be 100-200 Free, Fly as well as 200-400
IM. Perhaps Americans don't realise how much difficulty
Thorpe is in at the moment in terms of swimming PBs.
Consequently I think Phelps is a great chance in the 200
Free as well as the U.S. team in the 4 x 200. I think Phelps
will make his mark in the 100 Free and then withdraw from
the individual event. Should Phelps enter the 400 Free,
which I consider unlikely, he still has a good chance of
beating Thorpe though might have to swim conservatively (by
his standards) in the 400 IM Final in order to be relatively
fresh for the 400 Free final.

  7. Phelps won't win the 200 free. He has Thorpe, VDH and
Hackett in front of him. VDH will be the freshest swimmer in
the race, with the lightest racing schedule. So I'd suspect
that VDH could be the favourite. Phelps won't win the 400
free. Thorpe and Hackett so far ahead of him that he can't
catch them in the near future.
