I overheard the end of a conversation a couple of tri-folks were having and I thought I heard them use the term "fartleck" (sp?) repeatedly. What struck me as odd (in addition to the term itself) was to me, it sounded like they were describing a type of intervals training for running.
Can someone enlighten a fella and also let us know if it's applicable to cycling?

Think along the lines of intervals but without using timer or a rigid plan. Just like a race the high intensity work isn't premeasured or regularly scheduled or all the same time/distance/heart-rate.
