  1. My wife's road bike has a triple on the front. 9-speed,
    Shimano Tiagra front derailleur.

Going up a climb this morning she shifted to the inner ring
and the chain dropped -- again -- onto the bottom bracket.
Poor lass did an Artie Johnson to the left. Fortunately
there were no cars to run her over. She was pushing pretty
hard on the pedals when she did the shift.

I'm kind of stumped on this. My LBS has a great mechanic but
I should be able to solve this one myself.

The limit screw seems to be set all right -- it does not
appear to be pushing the chain too far inboard. On the stand
the chain doesn't even drop completely onto the granny ring,
it rides on the tops of the teeth before moving a bit
    further inboard and seating itself.

I wonder about the chain manufacture and model.
Shimano chains shift best on Shimano drive trains.
That being said, height and angle are also adjustments.
    Check Sheldon Brown's site:

There is similar information on Park Tool site in the repair help section.

I have resorted to a "crutch" on my triple equipped bicycles, including our tandems. Tossing the chain past the granny when working up a hill/mountain/grade just isn't something I can tolerate. I have never fallen yet with my wife on board the tandem. We use a device that keeps the chain from being able to go past granny. You can see it on Sheldon Brown's site &

Once Jump Stop is installed and properly adjusted you just forget that it's there. Unless you have some unusually designed frame, you will find a way to make it fit.

Try adjusting the limiting screw to ensure that the gap
between the cage and the chain is no more than 1 mm. and
yes, ask your bride to unweight the load during uphill
    shifts. She'll figure it out.

I had a problem with my road bike where either the FD would
not shift onto the small ring or it would overshoot and drop
inside. I got one of these:

    gvtc.comwhatis.html

and set the FD to overshift a bit. No more problems, even
    under load.

I rode with somebody tonight who had a similar problem. His
chainrings are very worn and need replacing.

Hi, I recently had a similar Arte Johnson moment. I just
couldn't get out of the pedals in time, after the chain
dropped. This was on my DA triple, I had the same problem on
a Sora double. In both cases I installed a N-Gear Jump Stop.
Why take a chance, when the solution is simple. I emailed
Nick on a Sunday and I received the Jump Stop on Wednesday.
He will send you one with a stamped return envelope to send
your $10 payment. A good product, fair price, and great
    service. Here is N-Gear's website:

I've often wondered how far from true the chainrings go
under large pedalling loads (but not hard enough to ever
measure anything). If it's a couple of mm it could easily
    cause this problem.

If that were the problem, the limit screw wouldn't prevent
the chain drop, because it would be the chainring going
    outboard of the chain.
