Fancy wheels for 190lbs (86kg) guy ?

The Canpy stuff is CYA BS. Any of the Mavics are OK.

I've got almost 50 pounds on you and about 600 miles ago I had a set of wheels built with Mavic CXP33 rims and Campy Chorus hubs of the 36 spoke variety. At a mere 185 lbs, I would think the same setup with 32 spoke wheels would be more than sufficient. But, riding style probably has as much to do with reliability as weight. I have learned to be "light" in the saddle when facing obstacles and have had no problems so far with these wheels.

I live in Brazil where the roads are better if they aren`t paved (because of the omnipresent holes), and I weigh 95 kilos(~210lbs). I have about 10,000 miles on a pair of Campy Neucleons that have been through hell and have never needed to be trued or repaired in anyway. They are way stronger and stiffer than my Zipp 304`s I race on too.

I'm a 200lber and am running Campy Protons. I was told of the Campy wheelsets in my price range, these should serve me fine. They're new to me, so I can't speak from long term experience yet.

I've been very surprised with the strength of Ksyriums (mine are SSC SLs)
as well as my Cane Creek Aeroheads. I put about 700 miles on them since July 04. During rides I hit a couple of hidden potholes that I figured would have at least knocked them out of true. Nothin. Same with the Aeroheads. By contrast, my Spinergy SR-3s were very finicky. Also, I had a nice pair of Ultegra db 14/15 Open Pro wheels built up and they were always coming out of true. (could have been the build; I locktited them and it seemed to improve).

For big guys, cost to performance, the Ksyrium Elite is probably the best wheel on the road. Reasonable price for high end performance, quite tough, very aerodynamic. That would be my recommendation. I only upgraded to the SL because the shop closed out a 2003 pair for the same price as 2004 elites.

My Ksyrium Elite just developed a split in the rim through one of the spoke holes. This wheel was less than a year old had only 3,500 miles on it and was never crashed or ridden into a potholes. I'm a little over 200 lbs, but I expect a "bomb-proof" wheel to last at least a couple years. I just picked up a SET of Protons for $39 more than the price of just the Elite rear wheel. I haven't put too many miles on them yet (Massachusetts has been like Siberia this winter), but my early impression is that they are stiffer and more responsive than the Ksyriums. I cannot speak about their durability yet, but they sure feel solid. They also look better (IMHO), black, understated and classic.

Dont know what everyone considers fancy wheels ,but I ride on some Rolf Vigors . And at 280 i havent had any problems with them . Got about 600 miles on them and they are as true as the day i took them out of the box.

At my heaviest (98kg) I rode Campagnolo Chorus hubs, Mavic MA20 Pro clinchers. No problems. At all.

I'm 260lbs and ride on Mavic Cosmos wheels. I also road Alex DA22 cheap rims and only popped about 1 spoke a year(~1200miles) on the back with that set.

Campy siroccos have a rep for being very strong. My wheelset is plain-jane but has proven to be nearly indestructable hauling my 220lb carcass over some nasty desert roads here in the Mojave. BTW my wheels are Veloce hubs laced into Fir Net97s with 32 14g DT spokes each. Over 2k miles and haven't even had to true them yet.

Thank you guys for your input. I ended up ordering the Campy Zondas, I got a good deal on those. Still waiting to get my Centaur group and the Zonda wheels. At least my weight is now at 187lbs and still going down 🙂

I am 169, and I have a pair of Campy Ventos and they are just fine. I believe that they are built to support up to 200, as far as what the Campy rep told me. They are also a bit on the heavier side, with 24 spokes in the front and 27 spokes in the rear, and weighing in at a hefty combined 2000 grams (I think that the number of spokes does make a difference). They are sturdy enough. On the other hand, I also utilize a Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL front clincher with 18 spokes and that weighs in at only 640 grams, and it's also sturdy enough for me. The Mavic is used in conjunction with my Renn 575 composite disc.

Got the Campy Zonda's now. My weight is at 184lbs. Looking to shave more pounds to hopefully hit 175lbs 🙂

Very happy with the wheels so far, they look strong but I'm careful to avoid cracks and holes. Great wheels.

Topo's are supposed to hold a big guy and boy they're light.
