Not me. Having moved away from the London suburbs to a leafy rural area
I don't want to have to travel in again to begin a cycle event.

I'm thinking of doing the Sonning Common 200km on Nov 5th.

yes I know what you mean, but the route gets very rural very quickly
AFAICT. It's a good long ride and fairly convenient for me travel -wise

That is a very good event, one of two new 200's myself and other
urc'ers did last year. Won't be doing it this year as we are
entertaining guests with some good old fashioned Pope burning down at
Lewes.

that's the one; we did it last year, all very pleasant until it chucked
its finest down in Quiet Lane just before the end. Fortunately my

I'd like to do that ride as I used to do a lot of cycling round there
when I lived in Reading, it would be nice to revive the memories. Its a
bit too far for me to travel to ride 200km though, I need to 'find
another reason' for being in the neighbourhood.

into the country. I wonder if DP remember me?

Just got back from the ride, very good indeed. We were spilt into
groups of 6-10 and sent off at 5 minute intervals. The start line was
novel; it was the start line of Herne Hill velodrome and we had one lap
before setting off; quite scary to ride round and then realise you are
on (n) degree banking, but no spills. After that up to Crystal Palace
where we bumped into the annual Land Rover London-Brighton; so much
like the normal school run ;0). Is there no limit to the number of
modes of transport that have to be ritually used to go to Brighton?
The entire route was signed so no audax stylee riding whilst squinting
at a sheet of A4 folded 8 times.
It did indeed get very rural very soon after that and before long we
were in leafy Surrey and struggling up the North Downs. At the top
there was a choice between carrying on with the 110km or cutting short
to 80; I persevered. After crossing the M25 it was all nice and
flattish through Edenbridge and Hever before the triple horrors of Toys
Hill, Hosey Common and Sundridge Hill. This was interspersed with a
control in a working man's club at Westerham (why do they put controls
in bars where much beer swilling is going on by everyone but the
cyclists?)
A few more lumps and we were back in suburbia, but it wasn't over yet.
The very last hill up to Crystal Palace saw liberal use of the triple.
And back down, not to the velodrome; but the sports club down the road,
with a bar, and pasta. This was spice up by the realisation that I
could actually finish the 110km in 5 hrs dead. Although this was
somewhat tarnished on seeing they had already dished out 4 gold
stickers to riders who had completed in under 4. Who are those guys?

I've just got back from a week's holiday in Budapest. I got out for 2
hours this morning. Looks like I'm riding at a similar pace to you.

I haven't ridden that track in ages, it's much more fun at a faster
pace as you end up with wheels perpedicular to the surface rather than
leaning out as we were doing on Sunday.

That was where I got dropped from my group, hardly surprising given
that my only riding of late has been the commute to work and the
steepest hill on that is Vauxhall Bridge so I don't think my time of
four hours for the short ride was too bad.

HILL number one at Woldingham, I remembered to take the bend on the
outside and managed to make it up without resorting to bottom gear.

I was always going to do the short ride.

I don't think I've ever been up Sundridge before down it yes but never
up it. Even bottom gear proved too high and I ended up on foot for
about thirty yards of the steepest bit.

My hill of choice back over the Palace would be up Crystal Palace Park
Road on the other side of teh park rather than the soul destroying
tripple steeped Anerley Hill.

I dunno, but the fastest time for the long ride was done by Warrick
Spence - 3 hrs 27 mins. In all 189 riders completed.

PS I was the one on the Birdy Red - very comfortable and handles very
well "a la campagne" only momentary hesitation on my part descending
The Slines. After that I had great fun going down Downe Hill and
making a demon descent down College Road to make sure I too finished
with an even hour.

Our shirt is markedly different and much nicer than theirs! (plus they
were all on the way back up to the Palace as I was coming down)
