SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An explosion in San Francisco's central financial
district on Friday injured at least one woman, and police closed several city
blocks while they searched cause of the blast.
A police spokesman said it may have been an underground explosion. An electrical
transformer could have been the cause of the explosion, one official said.
Witnesses reported a large bang shortly before 10 a.m. near Post and Kearny
streets in front of a Ralph Lauren store in the central business district.
The blast caused lights in office buildings in the area to flicker. One woman
was sent to the hospital with injuries, police officer Jason Hui said.
Officials evacuated buildings in a one block perimeter of the blast and roped
off streets leading into the area. Several hundred workers milled around.
Dozens of firefighters and a number of fire trucks rushed the area, as did local
utility workers.

nothing else -- they took 30 seconds worth of information
and consumed 30 minutes of air time with it.

An important point they did not make is that if this had
been an actual terrorist act, the crowd of spectators
should have been cleared from the area. It is a common
tactic to plant two bombs, one to draw a crowd and the
emergency responders and a second one to blow them away.

Latest news confirms it was a transformer and police were making way
for 10 or more PG&E trucks to enter the area.

There have been a few occasions when airports have been evacuated
because of some security breach. All those people milling around
outside the airport would be a good target for a terrorist. Absolutely
no security out there.

I'm glad that your son was okay and that you can now catch your breath
and relax a bit.

Thank you all for the quick update -- I've been out of the house all
day and hadn't had a chance to get the details. I heard there was an
explosion, but not where, and I have a friend in North Beach. She
travels through China Town daily, so she could have been in either of
those two areas. I'm relieved to hear that it happened away from where
she'd be.

If a transformer blew as they can...more than flickering of the lights
woulda happened. There would have been at least a 2 or 3 second delay of
power, if not way longer.

It's so nice to know we have our priorities straight. As one
newcaster noted, although there's a woman in the hospital in critical
condition with extensive burns from the explosion, there was no
blackout. Whew! ....lucky us.

What's interesting to me, a 35 year resident of the bay area, is that
the same sort of thing and others like it associated with the electrical
power grid seem to happen routinely in S.F.

To the point where Mayor Newsom has just called for an investigation as
to the frequency of such phenomena in S.F. that before 9/11 were a very
local & common & usually minor event that did not make the national news
or merit a Reuters news feed. Peoples first thought was not
"terrorists" but rather another transformer blowing up in S.F.

If KQED were not doing a pledge drive i would have been watching a
cooking show rather than have the set on local new coverage of the
event. And would not have known about it till latter when i turned on
the evening news. I got a sense almost of disappointment from the
coverage, that it was ONLY a transformer blowing up. The media seems so
geared up to be on their guard and vigilant that anxiety levels are way
up, they seem hysterical about it, perhaps, as some observers have
commented, the acts of 9/11 and London and Madrid et al serve more to
effect the populations of the west's consciousness than they are of any
real strategic value. Terrorism can drive a person crazy, living under
the threat of brutality will have an effect not only on an individual
but if the threat is broad enough on whole populations. Influencing if
not changing the national character.

Now about this weather we have been having recently, what happened to
summer? i have not had my annual "warm San Francisco night" yet!

August is always fog. Traditionally, late August is the time people
in the EBay get to experience the true SF summer that the rest of us
(on the foggy side of the "hill"😉 has had since mid-June. I spoke to
a friend who lives in Berkeley this morning - she said they had our
fog and cold too.

Didn't it ever clear up for you today? Call me perverted, but I get

Usually, over on this side of the bay we don't get the summer fogs the
city is famous for, but the last week has been like late fall. Cold,
damp, low overcast skies etc.

Today is bright, warm and boding to be a lovely day. Even Berkeley is
clear, often times while Oakland will be bright, sunny and warm Berkeley
will be cold, windy and fogged in.

A quick glance out the window suggest a low ceiling in the city, i can
see the fog bank from here.

One time going to the old de Young we walked half way through the park
and into a fog bank, it was eerily distinct, very clear cut, wall like,
line of demarcation between the clear sunny area of the park and the
damp fog with in. A veritable wall of fog. Coming out of the park we
were all just a little depressed by the fog and decided to hurry back to
the sunshine and warmth of the east bay, not even stroll around the
Japanese tea garden which i never miss, we trudged back to haight street
where we had parked and lo and behold, just past the giant ferns we took
a few final steps out if the fog and into brilliant sunshine and a warm
breeze, about 4 - 5 blocks away from haight, turned our whole day around
and we went to the old Cafe Flora on market to decide what to do with
the rest of our day in the city.

Cafe Flor is still there. I had lunch across the street from it (at
La Mediterranee) this week. Helped the economy by buying a crystal
decanter at Earthtones and then shopping at Cliff's Hardware.
