Expedition xx Mull May 4/5/6

What I've been mulling (sic) over is whether to try and do all the Marilyns
on Mull. I was a bit shocked to find over 20 there, but only 1 Munro. A
quick estimate showed it'll probably take 7 days.

I think the original plan was to leave half the cars on the mainland at
Oban, camp a day or so while Martin bags the last Munro, and then go back
and collect the cars at the mainland. Although, for those wanting to stay
longer, to take their cars over.

Also, Martin, if you're reading this, are we to climb Ben Hope @ 01:23am
4th May 2006 (01:23 4/5/6) ?

From the Fort, the two ferries route is fine. It's a nice drive round
Moidart if you have the time.

I stayed at the Tobermory campsite last year. It was very quiet at the
time but the locals are friendly and the place is clean. That 1 1/2
miles into town is fine - but it's all (steeply) uphill on the way back!

The best way onto Mull is probably the big ferry from Oban to
Craignure. To get to Oban take the A85 from Tyndrum. Or get the train.
We will make a decision at some time as to who is taking their cars
over. I think Martin is getting his mate to take his Winebago.

I've stayed at the Balmeanach site in summer. Midge city as it is
sheltered by trees. We should be OK at the beginning of May though.

Yes - it sounds a good idea to pop the cork on Ben More at that time.

My currently half-thought through plan was to spend a few days on the
island = compleat the Munro, grab the Corbett/Marilyn Dun da Ghaoithe,
maybe grab some other Marilyns and commission a special boat trip to
Iona and Staffa. And have an evening in Ballymory.

As for campsite - Craignure seems to be the logical choice.

Yes & Cynthia makes the best shortbread I have ever tasted! Nice little
site.

Midge city in the summer, but the Craignure site is usually pretty midge
free.....but you have to put up with rules from the very strange owner.
Good site though with plenty of loos etc.

I realise that - however, if the group was big enough to warrant a
special booking it might be interesting to have a boat that takes us to
both the islands - and give us time to visit and explore them to our
itinerary.

I've never been in the situation where I have arranged for a ghillie to
row me across the loch and then pick me back up in the late afternoon -
and I thought it would be nice to finish with a Poucher moment.

If Best is Easiest thebn take the road to Oban.

If best is fun then the thrash across Morvern is pretty good, drove out to
Ardnamurchan twice from Blair Atholl in 2000 once to produce the road book
and the 2nd time running 30 mins ahead of the others during the actual run.
I was somewhat suprised to discover that 2 of the others had caught up with
me about 2 miles from the lighthouse.

If you really want to go by Morvern and Ardnamurchan with a car your options
are

Lochaline -> Fishnish is the shorter of the ferry journeys
Tobermory -> Kilchonan also runs, judging by the fact that that the journey
is now 35 mins and not the 50 it was a few years ago the boat might be
slightly bigger than the Island Class boats.

Hopefully, I'll be on Mull all week preceding the 4/5/6, and I'm very
interested in bagging as many as possible---perhaps nearer the time
plans can be firmed up?
