Expedition or not?

newsgroup went off on a day walk together. There was a big discussion
about whether it should be classed as an expedition or not. Eventually
it was decided not to call it an expedition since it was only a day
walk, not a weekend.

We need to make a similar decision here. If this really is Expedition
16 then a thread should be started with that name to make it perfectly
clear to everyone, including those that may not even be aware of it.

I think you're going to have to accept that the neat classification of
yesteryear (ou sont les neiges d'antan?) may now be finished. We now
have a fairly high number of regulars who are damned unruly where
naming and lists are concerned.
You could simply rename them all under a catch-all title such as
'trips by urw-ers'.

Hey, I like numbers and lists.

For what it's worth (if anything), I've never thought the winter
skills course was an 'expedition' within the meaning of the word as
it's generally used here, but I really don't mind what we call it as
long as everyone knows that he/she is welcome.

The term "expedition" was coined by former newsgroup member Chris
Boughay, who first suggested these regular get-togethers, and the
practice has continued ever since, even though Chris no longer organises
these events or records their details on his website.

The term "expedition" was never meant literally, it was a
tongue-in-cheek description for our poncy little rambles, to make them
sound more important!

It seems that some of the newer members of this newsgroup are not well
acquainted with the origins of the "URW Expedition" tradition, so why
not check out Chris Boughay's Expedition pages for an insight into the
early expeditions, or a pleasant refresher for those who've seen them
before;
