I found an exercise bike even more boring than most exercise machines, and hard on my knees to boot.

I'm a big fan of the Nordic Track and TV+VCR arrangement. Good workout, and I can watch the trashy
movies I recorded from the sat receiver overnight.

Any decent exercise machine will NOT be cheap; things at garage sales are there for a reason. You
might find a bargain though.... I'm also not a fan of treadmills or any things with motors.

But that's just my opinion.

Before you buy and exercise bike, please try out an elliptical crosstrainer. An elliptical will help
strengthen more muscles and be much more effective than an exercise bike or a treadmill. I use a
Nordic Track, and I like it a lot. The downside of an elliptical is that they are bigger.

I did a lot of shopping for an exercise bike when I first started losing control of my bG.

I found one, and it worked very well. I had raging arthritis and a hip-ready-to-be-replaced at the
time so there wasn't a lot else out there that I could handle as an indoor exerciser for bG control.

I ended up with the Schwinn. I paid $400, the list price in 1995. No Schwinn dealer was any higher
or any lower.

The only other brands that were comparable in quality were also about $400

The cheaper brands were unacceptable. Test a Schwinn at the beginning of your shopping exercise, it
gives you a standard of comparison.

The cheaper brands don't do well for taller folks. At 5-10, I had a lot of problems with the
cheaper ones.

Also, check the relationship between your hands and knees when you use the Schwinn. The cheaper
bikes don't have that complex crank and thus the cheaper brands offer problems with hand-knee
clearance and general awkwardness.

<shrug> Seems like a reasonable exercise solution to me, but YMMV, especially if video games aren't

Around here (Lincoln, NE) we have a place called Play-It-Again Sports. They handle new and used
sporting equipment of all types. See if there is something like that in your area.

Do you have any "Play It Again" sports shops in your area? That's a good place to buy used
equipment. Or you could try looking in the want ads.

Since We don't know where you live, here's a few hopefully local options for you. Most department
stores, Sears, Pennys, will have Repair Outlets, that carry either returned, reconditioned, floor
models and discontinued items. They will normally carry full warranties. More often than not without
their original boxes and sometimes without owners manuals (but those can be ordered or printed out
in the store).

Play It Again Sports (not sure if this is a national chain or not, but they have new and used items.
Yard Sales, and the Want Ads in the Exercise Section of the classifieds are full of used and often
hardly used, exercise bikes, treadmills and weight equipment. You will see a lot of items just
before Christmas as people scramble for extra spending cash.

I love my recumbent bike. The treadmill was too hard on my knees and back. Plus I've had three
inside ankle surgeries and it's very hard for me to find sneakers without those puffy collars around
the rim. IMHO

If you want to be REALLY COOL and you have an outdoor road bike, then get yourself rollers.

If you want to be COOL and you have an outdoor road bike, then get yourself a wind trainer.

If you want to be techie and you have an outdoor road bike, then get yourself a Sony Playstation
game that connects to your indoor bike set up.

Use a fan to cool yourself down.

I use my indoor bike gear to hang up clothes to dry.

Which reminds me of the time I was in Lincoln (I'm from hilly north Jersey) and went to a bike
store to test ride a bike. "This bike is really fast!" I thought. Then it occurred to me that the
terrain was flat!
