A few days ago I discovered I'd lost my favourite ball cap.
It's from The Kerrisdale Lumber Company in Vancouver, BC.
It's black w/ white grommets, and has white embroidery of
a wagon and a draught horse being led by a slouch-hatted
teamster; the lettering underneath all that says:
" -- EST. 1921 --". The only place it says "Kerrisdale Lumber"
is on the front edge of the brim, in microscopic typeface.
It's all cloth -- none of that cheap plastic webbing in the
back, and it has that patina'd brass clamp-y thing to adjust
the strap in the back.
So today I rode cross-town to Kerrisdale Lumber on the
off-chance I might get a new one.
I was inexorably compelled, and would have done this rain
or shine, winter or summer, hell or high water. I absolutely
/needed/ that cap. I also wanted the ride, and somewhere to go,
so I didn't phone ahead and ask if they had those caps. Even
if I came away empty-handed, at least I'd get some sort of
ride in.
All the fair-weather weekend warriors were out in full force,
riding around for whatever reasons they had. I bet not many
of 'em would think to ride cross-town just for a stupid free
hat. But maybe some of 'em will get hooked that much. I
hope so.
BTW, I got the cap. I so earnestly described my plight that
the guy behind the counter who, on discovering there weren't
any under the counter, went downstairs and brought back a
fresh box of caps, opened it up, and gave me the first one
out of the box.
Then I rode around some more to look at bike trailer hitches
for design ideas, but didn't see any (I just obtained the
discarded frame + wheels of a jogging stroller and I wanna
make a trailer out of it.) I also hit the DQ for some dinner,
and then rode around looking for cheap sunglasses, but didn't
find any I liked. Maybe next time.
Anyways, there's lots of excuses to /not/ ride, but there's
also lots of excuses to ride. My current favourite excuse is
to simply not be home in case the landlady springs a surprise
visit (I still owe her a bunch of back rent.)
cheers,
Tom
