I will support your threads that support helmet advocacy. I believe that if
you are doing particularly dangerous stunts you should be wearing a helmet,
and if you are on concrete the Styrofoam helmets aren't enough. I think that
95% of the people on here would agree.

On the other hand just because a person is on a bike doesn't make him a
mountain biker. The irresponsibility of the adult in the group doesn't
reflect the majority of real mountain bikers.

You are completely wrong on that. Mountain biking is INHERENTLY irresponsible in
its impacts on people and wildlife. Why don't you talk about responsible crack
use? Or bulldozer racing? Or child molestation? The list goes on. The majority
of real mountain bikers are indeed irresponsible idiots. In fact, I have yet to
meet even ONE honest, responsible mountain biker. It is a contradiction in
terms. An oxymoron, with the emphasis on "moron".

give you an objective viewpoint here:

It's almost a certainty that you've never met an honest, responsible
mountain biker because self-respecting, honest, responsible, decent
people most likely prefer not to spend time with you.

I dunno. This debate about helmets has been chewed over and over ad
nauseum. And in theory anyway, a bike helmet saves you by destroying
itself - absorbs the impact and crumples like a car bumper. Splitting
down the middle: It's not a design failure - it's a feature! Whoo hoo!

I haven't really had a serious accident made less severe by a helmet.
Having said that, a helmet did collect the sharp 1" diameter end of a
broken branch as I ducked under overhanging foliage at speed once upon a
time. I'm pleased that the only pieces removed were from the helmet,
not my scalp. In that one instance, I can saying with 99% certainty
that wearing a helmet did save me from stitches and injury.
