I went for a ride today, a short 20 miler. I felt slow and tired from the
outset, and couldn't get my speed above 17mph on my road bike. I'm dieting,
and there was a headwind, so I chalked my slowness and tiredness up to that.
About 17 miles in I caught a whiff of a nasty burning smell. I got off the
bike and looked it over, only to discover MY REAR BRAKE WAS DRAGGING. D'oh!
I was much faster on the way home......

I was much faster on the way home......I went out for a quick 'round the block ride to check my new glasses mounted rear view mirror and forgot to double-tie
my shoelaces. The left lace got totally wrapped around my pedal and was getting tighter and tighter with each rev.

doh.
Arrgh. I'm having flashbacks to the laces of my Chuck Taylors getting caught
on my Supergoose. That does suck. -

How does the function of a glasses mounted rear view mirror differ
when on-bike vs when off-bike? -

Once I went out wearing two different gloves! I had an old pair and both
pairs looked kind of similar, blue on the backs. I didn't notice until I was
out there and miles from home. Ever since then, I keep the pairs of gloves
separate!
However, another time I was on a ride and I kept hearing a sort of flapping
noise, like something was stuck on my tire. Instead it was a piece of rubber
sticking out, and the tube was exposed!! Not good. I went home and picked up
a new set of tires the next day. So it wasn't one of those DOH moments but I
could have blown a tire! -

I was much faster on the way home......Rode a century with my bottom bracket generator clicked into the on
position on a near 100 degree day. Was lying in near collapse at the
end of the ride, drinking cold spring water, when I looked from that
different angle (flat on my back) and realized why I couldn't keep up
with anyone all day.Had about a quarter inch of asphalt transferred via the tires to the
generator wheel. Don't know where that happened...Curtis L. Russell

I had a problem with my rear wheel .I could not get the sideways play out of it.
I just had the wheel built and the fellow re greased the hub. but I could not
get all of the sideways play out of it without getting too tight of bearings. so
I decided that the bearings may be bad and I took it apart and bought new
bearings. well when I got it all apart I found some play in the free hub. well
that was easy to tighten it but I think I got the bearings backwards. when I got
it together (took about 15 times to get the pawls back into the hub. the axle
turned out lopsided. well I was about to give up on it and took it apart and
lost one of the pawls and a spring (dropped them about 10 times) so I gave up
and had to buy a overpriced rear wheel till this one is fixed.--

What about the original Gastown GP that was resurrected and claimed
itself as the (interrupted) continuation of the historic Gastown GP
(oh you know what I mean). This states it is the first one?? -

Krebs Cycle's "Steam it up". 3.6 km from Gaglardi and Broadway to
somewhere up on University road (this is near Simon Fraser University,
on Burnaby Mountain, of course). They had a map of the course up, but
have now replaced it with the results. This is a pretty interesting course, as prologue-length hillclimbs go.
The course has a slight slope at the start, points into a steady uphill
until somewhere around the 2km mark, and then goes around a gentle
right-hand curve and gets really steep for about 200 metres or so. After
that, it's into a gentle top-gear descent for a few hundred metres,
followed by a spirit-breaking little rise to the finish.I didn't exactly cover myself in glory with a 12:11.99. I beat two
riders up the hill (out of a miserable 17 participants in all
categories), and finished on the same second as two other riders.http://cf.geocities.com/dseamar/
Coming in 6/100s behind Marni Prazsky, the only female competitor, is a
worthy achievement (for all practical purposes, such a performance is a
tie, I keep telling myself) since she is a regular winner of local
women's events. That said, she probably raced a very long road race in
Mission the day before this climb. If I'm second-guessing myself, I would have probably done a little more
spinning and a little less mashing on this climb. I basically rode up to
the steep section in a single gear after the starting run, and stood to
pound through the steep bit. I was gassed after that, but that was the
plan anyways. If I had to do it again, I would have started riding this
course weekly six weeks ago 🙂. To my credit, I think I paced this ride
about right, and when I rode through the finish, I was more exhausted
than I can ever remember being on any bike ride I have ever done. I
nearly fell over after I got off my bike. I don't think I left anything
significant in the tank.Fast time was an inhuman 9:38.72.

I think I will. I'll have to make sure I'm off early (easy) for that
race, but it galls me slightly to pay $35 for what will be (for me) a
30-minute crit.Ask me closer to the race if I have registered, but all signs point to
yes.--

bar tape? paint? breakfast. too much water.Steel frame, too many spokes, used a heavy aero rear wheel, should have
taken off my bike bell and empty bottle cages (no water on the bike for
a 12-minute TT...).Quoted message said:

Yeah. I bet my 22-pound race bike was the problem.
ObHardcore: I don't know how he placed, but one dude rode the course on
a fixed gear. He used about a 53/20.--

Salut Tom
The Tour de Gastown got me enjoying bike races. (The last 2 are the
only official bike races I've ever attended). Unfortunately, I won't be
attending the Yaletown Crit. I've booked a week in a little hideout in
the S. Okanagan for me n my sweetie. We may get up to 10 mph on our way
down the Okanagan River path to Oliver for a visit to the Frostee Freeze
(or whatever they call it nowadays) , but we plan to leave early to
avoid the rush. 🙂
Enjoy the race! I'll look for your comments when I get home.
