I haven't walked any of it. I live within a few miles of the northern end.
Unless you've a very strong reason to want to do it, I'd not bother; there
are loads of walking routes in other parts of the country which are a lot
more attractive. If you want to travel in that area, use a bicycle; its
quicker and cuts out the tedious bashing through crop fields. Having
recommended a bicycle, I would caution that some Essex car drivers are not
particularly considerate of cyclists; I find Suffolk and Norfolk to be much
better for cycling.

If you want a walking holiday, stepping off the Harwich ferry, then I'd
suggest heading north and the Suffolk coast path. Check whether the
Harwich-Felixstowe ferry is running, if not, its a train ride via
Manningtree & Ipswich (or train and bus until mid-September due to
engineering work near Ipswich).
Still not a route I'd recommend heavily to anyone. I'd use a bicycle to
cover a similar route to the path. But the Suffolk coast path will be a lot
nicer than the Essex Way.

I grew up at the Eastern end and cycled much of the final 10 miles of
what was to become the Essex Way. I occasionally walk some of those bits
now when I return to my roots but only because there isn't any
worthwhile walking in the area.

I do. Its a few miles to Essex and the Essex Way. As I said in the original
reply.

Or, do you mean that Essex drivers can spot a Suffolk cyclist and respond
accordingly :-).
I'm afraid its not that simple, as the Essex drivers also seem to drive a
bit too close to my Essex friends.

to non existant and even major roads were narrow, bendy and lacking in
road signs. Give cyclists any room and you would hit any traffic coming
the other way. :-)
