Ergo Rebuild Problem

I'm guessing you did not have the Ergo shifted into the low gear spot
or high gear spot when putting it together. See the third page of the
second link above. Second and third paragraphs on this third page say
to have the shifter in high gear (little cog) when reassembling and
then to have it in low gear (big cog) when doing some more reassembling.

Maybe you have something spun around 180 degrees from where it should be?

I think everyone who does this screws up their first try (or a
significant portion of that group). I did. I now have done my sixth
rebuild (five levers, one twice) and I am down to about 20 minutes per.

It will be much easier this time 🙂

I suspect that the thru bolt flats, EC-RE-251 for 1999 and later, are
not in the 'slot' of the center of the shift disc...and the shift disc
is not rotating along with the front toothed bushing. Probably the
toughest part of rebuilding the lever. If no soap, send it to me and
I'll put it back together.

I've done it too, converting an 8-speed lever to 9-speeds; and I'm a
committed Shimano user. Only time I ever took an Ergo lever apart.
It's not that hard. Try again.
