I am just starting to ride. I am a fattie trying to get in shape. I am riding 5 miles daily and increasing with each ride. How important are shoes and riding shorts? I will need to ride for awhile to fit into riding shorts! Any help will be appreciated.
I just got into cycling about 2 months ago. I'd definately recommend the shorts. Once you've experienced the comfort they offer, you'll never want to ride without them. I'm doing two 30 mile rides a week now (yes, after only 2 months of riding daily) and I'm still wearing a pair of running shoes. I think I must be missing out on something , but they work fine for the time being.

They have XXL and XXXL bike shorts. Made fairly well and they are CHEAP compared to store shorts which only go up to XL.
Beware the shirts, although they are made good and look like they would be nice, they aren't the same.
I ordered XXL shorts which fit PERFECT. I ordered XXL Shirt and it won't fit around my 295 gut
Re shoes - get 'em when you can. Shorts first though. If you get real bike shoes w/ clips then you get MORE workout for SAME miles (because you PUSH and PULL every stroke!)...

At the risk of being repetitive, go for the shorts! I also did a lot of ridding with toe clips before getting shoes. I would put padded shorts and a good jersey before ridding shoes!🙂
Shorts first, then shoes. While cycling shoes are much more comfortable than tennis shoes/other regular shoes on long rides, cycling shorts are much more important. After all, it's not like you'll be chafing on your feet.
