Meanwhile, the Equal folks state that splenda contains dextrose and
maltodextrin, but no sugar. Last time I checked, those were sugars.

Sigh, the stupid things our legal system makes people do.

How is "our legal system" making anyone do anything here?

In general, our legal system does a couple of things:

    1. It removes any other means of redress.

    2. It rewards those who proactively sue.

    3. It encourages defensive legal actions.

    4. It rewards vigilance against legal grey areas.

    5. It fosters a keen attention to minutae and picky details.

In order to survive in our [usa] legally bound capitalist system,
people (meaning people doing business) have to "play the game" to keep
    up.

Maltodextrin is closer to cornstarch than a sugar, IIRC.

I hadn't realized that Splenda sales had surpassed Equal.
Though the fact that there are plenty of generic aspartame
    packets dampen that fact somewhat.

I always said their slogan should be

    Splenda...there's no equal
